Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking an individual for the Gateway to College Program at the Petaluma Campus to join an outstanding team of staff to provide high quality services to our district, our community, and most importantly to our students. This is a categorically funded, full-time classified position. Work schedule will be between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday with possible evening and weekend shifts as needed, so candidates must have scheduling flexibility. The primary worksite for this position is the Petaluma Campus. Under direction of the Director of the Gateway to College program, oversees outreach and administrative aspects of the program working with high schools and community agencies for recruitment purposes; assists Gateway students who are receiving their High School Diploma, SRJC certificate and/or degree, and/or transferring to baccalaureate colleges and universities; and performs related work. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.
The Gateway to College program at Santa Rosa Junior College serves young people at risk of not completing high school or who have stopped attending school. The program gives students the opportunity to earn a high school diploma while transitioning to a college campus and earning college credit. Students succeed in an educational setting with the support of the programs caring team of instructors and student support specialists who each possess experience and commitment to under-served youth. In their first year, students take classes in a learning community as the foundation for their matriculation into college-level coursework. The SRJC Petaluma Campus currently enrolls nearly 6,000 students in credit and non-credit courses. Each semester, approximately 350 course sections in nearly 60 disciplines are offered, including many majors and certificates as well as all of the courses necessary for transfer to UC, CSU, or to complete SRJCs general education requirements. SRJC has been offering courses in the Petaluma area for nearly 50 years. The original Petaluma Center operated primarily as an evening program until the completion in 1995 of permanent facilities on its current site, and was granted campus status by the SRJC Board of Trustees and the California Community College Chancellors Office in the spring of 1999. A second phase of new construction was completed in 2008; a third phase renovated the original campus. This project, the largest of its kind in SRJCs history, tripled the square footage of the campus. Among the new facilities are labs and classrooms, a second art studio, a 35,000 square foot library, a physical fitness center, a bookstore, student services and support areas, expanded dining space, faculty/administrative offices, and a 256-seat auditorium. The campus offers state-of-the-art technology throughout, including a wireless network, fully mediated instructional facilities, and video-conferencing capabilities. Other unique features of the campus include the Capri Creek restoration project and an accessible walking and bike trail system. A Cinema Series, Digital Media, Networking, Helpdesk, Fitness, Nutrition and Health, CISCO, and Water Resources Technology certificates are some of the program offerings unique to the campus. This beautiful campus is located 35 miles north of San Francisco.
Required Abilities and Knowledge:
The ability to demonstrate effective public speaking skills; oversee group activities; interpret and apply the rules, regulations, and policies of the District; operate a personal computer and enter data into computer database; proficiency with software programs such as desk top publishing, word processing, and spread sheets; follow oral and written directions; perform event coordination; draft correspondence; proofread documents for accuracy; maintain effective working relationships; communicate effectively both orally and in writing in both English and Spanish (bilingual abilities required); apply appropriate problem-solving skills to the coordination of program projects; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population. The knowledge of issues relating to ethnically diverse population or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantage; federal, state and local laws and regulations governing funded programs; applicable federal and state laws and regulations including Equal Employment Opportunity; college recruitment and marketing techniques; college policies and procedures relevant to the Gateway to College program; financial aid and scholarship assistance programs available to students; effective human relations skills and training.
Associates degree and increasingly responsible experience working with low-income or ethnically diverse groups and bilingual ability in Spanish required. Demonstrated sensitivity to and experience working with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disabilities and ethnic backgrounds of high school and/or college students; OR the equivalent.

This classification requires the use of a personal vehicle while conducting District business. Must possess a valid (Class C) California drivers license and an acceptable driving record, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration and licensing.
Position requires frequent travel to various area high schools, organizations, and community organizations, and between the Petaluma and Santa Rosa Campuses.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
The Gateway to College Outreach Specialist coordinates community outreach efforts to schools, agencies, and other organizations that may benefit from Gateway to College Program; maintains effective liaison programs; assists with data tracking and reporting efforts, budget and office administration.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Works under the direction of the Gateway to College Director and in accordance with Gateway to College guidelines; communicates in English and Spanish for presentations, recruitment events and at community events and represents the college at these events; develops, implements, and organizes outreach activities, orientations and parameters for Gateway to College programs which facilitate student recruitment and retention; makes presentations, leads workshops, and disseminates information regarding the college and Gateway to College to on campus departments, high schools and other community agencies; conducts recruitment efforts among targeted groups to promote Gateway to College and encourage educational advancement; provides information about college services and educational programs and Gateway to College to students regarding District requirements, program eligibility, college transfers, and related issues; assists high school students and potential SRJC students with applications and forms; ensures that they have submitted all required documents, college entrance test scores, financial aid packets, course enrollments, etc.; in coordination with Gateway to College Counselors, assists Gateway to College students who are transferring to colleges and universities; works collaboratively with Student Services departments and programs in providing a coordinated approach to outreach activities on behalf of the Gateway to College program; coordinates and maintains liaison with various campus departments, high schools and other community agencies as required; gathers data and prepares reports related to the Gateway to College enrollment, attendance and outreach activities; maintains appropriate records and files for Gateway to College students under the direction of the Director; translates outreach tools such as brochures, flyers, application materials, annual student evaluations and web pages for Gateway to College programs from English to other languages (most commonly to Spanish) appropriate to populations targeted for Gateway to College recruitment efforts; assists with the development and maintenance of the Gateway to College SRJC website, brochures, and other materials; coordinates complex administrative tasks within assigned department or area; initiates changes in procedures and trains others; may supervise and organize the work of student employees and short-term, non-continuing (STNC) employees.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary Range: $3,973 - $4,832 per month (2012/13 Classified Salary Schedule); salary reflects a 5% reduction for the 12/13 year with an equivalent amount of time off); maximum initial placement at $4,382 (placement within this range based on experience as documented in application materials.)
Fringe benefits: The District offers a competitive health & benefits package for employees and eligible dependents (benefits premiums are pro-rated for part-time employees).
Leave/Holiday time: Full-time classified members earn 8 hours of sick leave and start off accruing 6.67 hours of vacation for each month worked (accrual rate increases after third year of employment and rates are pro-rated for part-time employees). Employees are also compensated for holidays recognized by the District (14 holidays/year, pro-rated for part-time employees).
Classified employees are required to become a dues paying member of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), or pay a service fee.
