The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the universitys teaching, research/administrative space, and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost-effective services to the university, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, and minimize university liabilities and disruptions caused by the universitys maintenance, repair and building, and equipment modifications.
Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to provide engineering technical support to the design, construction, and operations of facilities on campus. The position utilizes engineering knowledge of design, construction, and operational methods to make decisions regarding approaches to resolving complex building system renovations and ensure efficient operations. This role provides expert technical and engineering knowledge to lead analysis, troubleshooting, and improvements for complex building systems to include HVAC, mechanical, steam, plumbing, life safety, and lab support.
The position works closely with other Facilities Division units and other stakeholders across campus. This position may manage outside designers and may produce in-house schematic drawings.

- Facilitate project budgeting and cost estimation
- Managing outside designers and producing in-house schematic drawings
- Conduct design reviews of building systems and infrastructure
- Provide project management oversight and guidance to junior staff, temporary employees and/or interns
- Develop projects, plans, and scopes of work in compliance with applicable codes and standards
- Manage the Warranty Program, which involves receiving as-built documents and operation and maintenance manuals, leading quarterly review meetings (including auxiliaries), assigning warranty investigations to staff, and reviewing findings while resolving disputes
- Oversee the design review portal for reporting renovation or new construction conditions and provide training on new equipment
- Coordinate and resolve post-construction issues
- Maintain and document attic stock inventory and all warranty-related information and maintain the cost avoidance list of completed warranty repairs
Work assignments may involve unique factors and be lacking in precedence on which to base decisions and may be technically complex as evidenced by a high number of variables and interrelated considerations. Work is often performed independently requiring professional knowledge of complex and/or detailed technical procedures. Work may require professional licensure or other certifications. Work performed includes exercising judgment and decision-making that directly impacts life, health, safety, and/or the environment.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelors Degree in the Engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or and equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Proficient knowledge of standard design and construction practices.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to proficiently operate a personal computer and a variety of software for email, word processing, spreadsheets, database & information collection.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office is required.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in Facilities Management of building systems
- Knowledge of building codes/standards in the state government/university settings
- Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Software programs
- Project management, maintenance, and operations activities experience is a plus.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- Valid drivers license required.
- Valid NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire.
Valid NC Driver's License required
