Job Search Summary: Villa Maria College seeks a dynamic and enterprising leader with a proven track record of success for the position of Vice President of Development (VPD). The VPD reports to the president and serves as a member of the president's cabinet. The position provides leadership for the Development areas including: Director of Grants and External Affairs, Director of Alumni, Director of Facilities Marketing and Prospect Research, Director of Special Events, and Development Secretary. The VPD will play an integral role in the College’s public relations and outreach efforts, as well as leads the College in major donor cultivation. The VPD serves as the chief development officer of the College, overseeing all fundraising activities as well as alumni relations. The Vice President works closely with the President and other senior leaders, and provides vision and leadership in the collective effort to attain the College’s strategic advancement and annual fundraising goals. He/she also serves as the principal administrative liaison to the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees. Specific responsibility will be to shape, direct and implement the activities of the ongoing comprehensive development efforts of the College through programs for principal and major gifts, the annual fund, planned giving and estate planning, facilities rental, grants and alumni relations. The individual will develop effective major donor programs involving corporations and foundations. The VPD most possess the ability to network in the community by identifying and creating personal and corporate relationships that will benefit the College. Candidates will possess in-depth knowledge of all aspects of development in higher education and have the ability to personally develop prospect relationships as well as an ability to lead and motivate both volunteers and staff, and to strengthen the advancement team for success. Sound judgment, high personal and professional standards, and respect for confidentiality are critical success factors. Candidates should also have a working knowledge of fundraising in a Catholic organization in and around Buffalo and Western New York. Candidates must demonstrate enthusiasm for and engagement with Villa Maria College’s mission. Position Summary: The VPD serves as the chief development officer of the College, overseeing all fundraising activities as well as alumni relations. The Vice President works closely with the President and other senior leaders, and provides vision and leadership in the collective effort to attain the College’s strategic advancement and annual fundraising goals. He/she also serves as the principal administrative liaison to the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees. Responsibilities: The Vice President for Development: • Serves as the chief consultant to the President on development • Identifies private, public and corporate/foundation sources of funding • Exhibits knowledge of philosophy of higher education philanthropy and its potential effects on faculty success and student performance. • Participates in the strategic planning of the College and develops specific strategic and operational plans for Development operations • Cultivates friends and donors • Raises funds for the College • Writes proposals and seeks funds through various direct or facilitated approaches • Responds to private donor requirements or requests • Establishes and maintains credibility with internal and external constituencies • Oversees the planning and coordination of special events • Develops advocacy relationships • Facilitates partnerships and economic development • Acquires non-cash contributions • Oversees the management of alumni relations • Contributes to marketing and promotion of the College • Oversees development information systems • Motivates key institutional personnel • Manages office resources (non-personnel) • Develops and manages budgets • Leads, builds and manages the office team • Responds to government agency requirements and requests • Troubleshoots externally funded projects • Ensures regulatory compliance • Negotiates agreements and contracts • Brokers knowledge with development professionals • Develops and supports the Board of Trustees in increasing its outreach and fundraising abilities • Fosters personal and professional development • Performs other job-related duties as assigned • Oversees rentals and facilities marketing Physical Demands/Working Environment: Ability to attend frequent on- and off-campus meetings, and willingness to work in the evening and on the weekend as required. Travel extensively within the region. Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The successful candidate should have knowledge of and ability in: strengthening comprehensive advancement programs; planning and managing comprehensive fundraising campaigns; cultivating major donors; expanding donor bases; extending outreach programs to alumni, parents, students and friends; and strengthening public relations so that the College’s constituents and the public better understand Villa Maria College’s mission, values and achievements. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The Vice President for Development must demonstrate substantial planning and fundraising skills; and thorough knowledge and understanding of MS Office, cost/fund accounting, marketing/sales theory and practice and the characteristics of students. Additionally, the VPD must have excellent supervision, leadership, team-building, problem solving, and negotiation skills. The position requires the ability to analyze and synthesize data, establish priorities, develop and participate in service area social networks, design and produce publications, write proposals and interpret and comply with rules and regulations. The VPD must be politically astute, an excellent communicator, and be able to drive for the College. Required Qualifications: Requirement Summary: • Bachelor’s degree & Master’s degree required. • Minimum of five years' experience in institutional fundraising, including prior supervisory experience, preferably in an educational setting. • Professional success in areas of capital campaigns planned giving, major donor development, and foundations and corporate relations or related areas. • Experience managing and leading major campaigns/projects, managing and forging relationships. • Experience supervising staff and building successful teams. • Successfully pass a criminal history background check. Requirement Narrative: The VPD will, at a minimum, hold a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s degree in an appropriate field. He/she will have a proven successful track record of raising significant funds, cultivating donor relationships, soliciting gifts, and identifying potential donors. Further, the VPD should have had successful experience in leading and supervising at least one of the following functions: alumni, planned gifts, annual and major gifts campaigns, grants, scholarship development or special events. He/she should also have experience with computerized record keeping systems and knowledge of accounting and budget management processes in a non-profit environment. The VPD should have previous experience leading volunteers, planning and setting strategic direction for fund-raising initiatives and complying with governmental and IRS regulations. Finally, the VPD will possess both the personal characteristics and experience that will create and maintain excitement for supporting fundraising within the college community. Preferred Qualifications: Ideally, the VPD will have eight or more years of increasingly responsible direct experience in private fundraising activities, with experience as a chief development officer and five years of supervision and team-building experience. He/she will also have earned the designation of CFRE. Finally, experience in leading and/or supporting a major gifts campaign is highly desirable.
