Position Title: AmeriCorps College Completion Coach

Reports To: Retention Specialist

Distinguishing Job Characteristics:

The AmeriCorps College Completion Coaches places college graduates, preferably with community college experience, onto community college campuses to provide in-depth, hands-on guidance and assistance to first-time community college goers who require remediation and are Pell-eligible with reaching proven milestones along their college completion path.

The College Completion Coaches is a corps of driven and highly-qualified professionals getting a start in education, which students can relate with and confide in as they are guided through their path towards successful completion of their postsecondary goals.

The AmeriCorps College Completion Coaches program will engage a total of 22 AmeriCorps Members statewide to serve in a full-time capacity (1,700 hours in 11 months) between August 1, 2012 through June 28, 2013.

Qualifications:

Associate’s degree preferred

Experience on a community college campus

Ability to effectively communicate and carry out the College Coaches and host site’s mission in the community.

Excellent communication and public speaking skills.

Ability to serve independently and be a contributing member of the College Coaches and host site team.

Strong attention to detail.

Ability to serve in a fast-paced environment and multi-task effectively.

Ability to commit to 1,700 hours of service in 11 months.

Ability to serve for at least 7 hours in a row on any given day.

Ability to serve during days, evenings, and weekends as required.

Ability to arrange own travel to and from service sites.

Strong organization and task management skills, self-motivation.

Proactive in the provision of service delivery.

Maturity, enthusiasm, positivity and great “people skills.”

Satisfactory result of BCI and FBI background check

Strong commitment and passion for increasing persistence and completion of postsecondary education for everyone.

Experience with a variety of computer programs including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite.

Salary Range:

$12,100 living allowance (please note, the living allowance is taxed)

Essential Job Duties:

Attitude and General Responsibilities:

Respect confidentiality of the students you serve, staff you engage within the college or otherwise, and other AmeriCorps members.

Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.

Abide by the AmeriCorps Rules of Conduct and Prohibited Activities(outlined in Member Service Agreement and Member Handbook)

Consult with your supervisor if you have any ideas, issues, or concerns, offering analysis and solutions whenever possible.

Program Leadership:

Participate on a team of AmeriCorps College Completion Coaches or other AmeriCorps Members and volunteers in your assigned location in the planning, creation, implementation and evaluation of service projects within host site community.

Each AmeriCorps College Completion Coach is responsible for recruiting a minimum of 8 volunteers to participate in service days or to assist with events at the school or for the College Coaching program at the campus. Ideally, volunteers will be secured beyond a one-time commitment.

Make connections with individuals and volunteers in the community for program outreach and program enhancement. College Completion Coaches should seek guidance and support from their host site supervisor in conducting outreach in their communities.

Train and assist volunteers for service day activities and other projects in which you engage them.

Be proactive in developing ways to better engage the students and families you serve

Program-Specific Duties:

Recruit 100 students to participate in the program.

Provide personal consultations with students throughout the academic year, in addition to group workshops.

Create and monitor on-time completion plans with students in your cohort, ensure completion of remedial coursework, enrollment in gateway courses and help to build momentum for students in completing college-level courses. Intervene with students to provide encouragement and to address barriers that may come up.

Assess student’s need and ensure they get connected to the resources – on-campus or off -to address barriers.

Develop workshops through the year orienting the students served to resources and services on campus and covering topics like civic engagement, financial literacy, financial aid, time management, etc.

Provide volunteer and community engagement opportunities to students and the community-at-large through the AmeriCorps days of service.

Communicate regularly with students within your cohort through the various available methods: phone, e-mail, in-person while on-campus.

Basic healthcare coverage. Premiums will be covered by the Ohio College Completion Coaches program.

Upon successful completion of the full-time 1,700 hour commitment, College Coaches will be eligible for an education award that matches the previous year PELL award, currently valued at $5,550.(please note, education award is taxed in year it is used)

Qualified Federal student loans are eligible for forbearance during time of service and potentially a portion of accrued interest may be eligible to be paid by the Corporation of National and Community Service after the completion of the service term. Note, AmeriCorps Members must follow instructions to apply for forbearance. Payments should be continued to be made on loans until a confirmation of forbearance is received directly from the lender.

If applicable, a childcare allowance will be provided by Gap Solutions Inc., if the member qualifies for the allowance.

Statewide orientation and advisor training in August 2012 in Columbus, Ohio
Intense training throughout the month of August provided by your host site to prepare you for recruiting your caseload of students and to begin providing effective service to them.
