President Obama's Visit - Remarks by Jill Biden and President Obama

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you! Hello, Hudson Valley! (Applause.) Thank you very much. Everybody, please have a seat. Thank you. Thank you very much. What a wonderful reception. It is great to be here. Thanks for whoever organized the weather. (Laughter.)

I want to, first of all, say thank you to Jill Biden, who has been a teacher for almost three decades and she's spent most of that time in community colleges. She understands, as all of you do, the power of these institutions to prepare students for 21st century jobs, and to prepare America for a 21st century global economy. And that's what's happening right here at Hudson Valley Community College. So give yourselves a big round of applause. (Applause.)
Academic Advising

The primary responsibility for academic advising of students rests with the Department Chair. However, due to the enrollment in some departments, faculty may voluntarily assist in this process on an hourly basis. Training is provided by the Office for Instructional Support Services and Retention. Faculty interested in becoming advisors should speak to their Department Chair.
Community and Professional Education

The Office of Community Education at Hudson Valley Community College offers a wide range of educational, professional and recreational credit-free classes for everyone from kids to seniors. Highlights include fitness classes, arts classes for kids and special interest classes like motorcycle riding or financial planning for retirement. We also offer non-credit certification programs in emergency medicine, paralegal training and other professional classes.

The CET provides faculty symposiums on post-secondary pedagogy and asynchronous distance learning, faculty/staff development workshops, and a media library for faculty. The CET also coordinates distance learning courses, for college credit, with area high schools. In response to the needs of the external community, the CET provides presentations and training to several external organizations, including the New York State Public Service Commission, Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Albany International Corporation and the SUNY Health Science Center.
