Position Summary

South Seattle College's Professional Technical division is seeking a Dean of Transportation, Manufacturing and Advanced Technology (TMAT) to lead the Aviation, Automobile Technology, Diesel, Welding, and Business Operations/Project Management Support programs into the future. The TMAT Dean is a full-time exempt position that reports to the Vice President of Instruction and is responsible for providing overall leadership and direction for the TMAT pathways, including existing and emerging programs and technologies such as e-vehicles.

As the senior administrator of the TMAT areas within the division, you are accountable for the divisional instructional programs and tasked with build and supervise a diverse team of faculty and staff to successfully support TMAT program, faculty and student success. You work collaboratively with faculty, staff, the campus, and community stakeholders on fiscally sustainable strategic planning and development, operational effectiveness, oversight for all curriculum, program accreditation, and learning standards, and development and implementation of TMAT and other key workforce initiatives. To be successful in this position you should be committed to enhancing and supporting students, faculty, and staff and implementing South's Anti-Bias Anti-Racist (ABAR) mission, and the ability to exhibit a high degree of understanding and empathy for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. You should have the ability to encourage the inclusion of all voices in decision-making, promoting equity in all areas, and actively working against institutionalized norms of oppression against historically marginalized people.

Salary range for this position is: $91,730 - $109,202

What you will be working on:

Division Leadership

  • Employ intersectional and collective leadership ethics and practices to cultivate a work environment, which values mutual aid and a spirit of generosity that centers the needs and voices of our community's most vulnerable members.
  • Work actively with the college to address societal injustice and lead the work to correct the harmful impacts of systemic racism, classism, and sexism embedded within the structures, practices, and values of the college.
  • Working in collaboration with business & industry, provide leadership to strengthen and develop programs that ensure consistency with current, changing, and future needs of students and the workforce community.
  • Provide direction and lead division in developing and offering current, relevant, and effective high demand programs and work with faculty in curriculum review and revision, outcomes assessment and improvement processes. Manage, evaluate, and modify the operation of the courses, classes and special programs/projects to maintain or improve instructional quality and to assure adherence to standards.
  • Assist instructors with recruiting and placing students by contacting and maintaining relationships with businesses, industry, schools, and agencies.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of ABAR processes for hiring and staffing part-time faculty, full-time faculty, and staff to build a workforce that reflects our student population
  • Recommend full time tenure track faculty candidates for employment.
  • Foster an organizational culture that supports collegiality, personal well-being, and professional development of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Support college initiatives, such as accreditation activities, as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain effective, involved technical advisory committees (TACs) for each preparatory program.
  • Represent the college as requested to develop, promote and enhance vocational education activities, including serving on statewide and college committees.
  • Participate in relevant on- and off-campus committee work, state and community boards and activities as appropriate and assigned by the Vice President of Instruction; Advocate for TMAT disciplines at the institutional, district, and state levels to ensure continued understanding, support, and growth of the division.



Fiscal& Facilities Management/Operational Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the supervision, training and performance management of assigned faculty and staff in adherence to negotiated agreements, applicable state and federal laws, as well as College policies and procedures. Hire part time faculty and staff to support division.
  • Ensure that all faculty are appropriately certified and have developed professional improvement plans.
  • Serve as Unit Administrator for faculty per the AFT collective bargaining agreement, is responsible for teaching observations, responding to student complaints, chairing tenure committees, and faculty searches.
  • Responsible for the timely development and monitoring of budgets for assigned programs, including specifications development and travel approval, while assisting with the annual, comprehensive instructional budget.
  • Ensure appropriate cost and quality control measures are adhered to when orders for instructional and non-instructional products are purchased.
  • In collaboration with campus safety, ensure that appropriate safety and security measures are designed, implemented, and maintained in all Programs and areas of responsibility.
  • Research, analyze and evaluate data to assist in student development and persistence.
  • Use working knowledge of WFSE collective bargaining agreement to support staff.
  • Effectively participate to resolve classroom issues including student complaints,
  • student conduct, Title IX, and discrimination in a manner that supports students and
  • faculty.
  • Actively engage division and collaborates with faculty coordinators in ABAR assessment and continuous instructional, learning-centered improvements to increase enrollment, retention, transfer, and completion.
  • Represent the division on South's Dean Instructional Council and collaborates with deans and directors across the college (including Student Services and Finance and Administration), district, and state to ensure that general education course offerings support college-wide program needs and accrediting body requirements


Communication and Collaboration

  • Fosters strong interpersonal relationships with faculty and staff that support and honor the strengths, areas of expertise, identities, and potentials of each individual.
  • Actively listens to faculty and staff needs and concerns and works collaboratively to practice consensus-based decision-making.
  • Fosters interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty, staff, and division deans to design, implement, and support ABAR practices, culturally adaptive pedagogies, shared divisional assessment practices, and values that best serve students.
  • Seeks cross-institutional and industry partnerships and accesses regional and national networks of support to develop South Seattle College's impacting the local and global communities


What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

Required Education, Experience & Abilities-as a successful candidate you will bring

  • A Bachelor's degree and a combined five (5) years of teaching and / or administrative experience at the post-secondary level
  • At least three (3) years of full-time combined teaching and service experience, or equivalent, at a postsecondary teaching institution or related institution.
  • At least two (2) years of demonstrated leadership in institutional programs (academic or non-academic) with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.
  • A thorough understanding, knowledge, and experience with professional technical program management, local, state, and federal program accreditation standards, educational planning and budget management.
  • A thorough understanding of curriculum development, educational planning and effective teaching and learning methods; Ability to plan, implement and accurately evaluate instructional activities (e.g. programs, courses, and projects).
  • Demonstrated leadership experience inbuilding, facilitating, and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships and collaborative teams.
  • Commitment to the educational role and philosophy of an open access community college and a demonstrated history of leadership that materially addresses equity and accessibility.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, think critically and exercise independent judgment
  • Demonstrated attention to detail as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work in order to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the education role and philosophy of the community and technical colleges through equity, and inclusive practices
