Summary

The Michigan Neuroscience Institute and the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology are currently recruiting for a Research Laboratory Area Specialist to work in a systems neuroscience laboratory (Burgesslab.org).  The Research Specialist will work closely with the Principal Investigator and other lab members to perform studies exploring neural circuits underlying behaviors such as feeding, sleep, and learning. Research in the lab involves neuroanatomy, optogenetics, and calcium imaging. The Research Specialist can expect excellent training and mentorship towards a career in science.

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Lab administrative/organizational work - ordering, inventory, setting up and maintaining equipment.

Lab work - Histology, microscopy, genotyping, mouse colony maintenance, and stereotaxic surgery.

Research – Design and execute neuroanatomy research using recent advances in tracing tools.

Required Qualifications*

Research Laboratory Specialist Senior -  Bachelor's Degree required. 5-6 years of related experience, i.e., published in a field of specialty and academic knowledge in a field or discipline. Master's or Doctoral Degree preferred.

Research Laboratory Specialist Intermediate - Bachelor's Degree is required. 4-5 years of experience in a related field. Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree preferred.

Desired Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree with 4+ years of previous full-time lab experience. MS preferred.
Experience with neuroscience research, including specific techniques: mouse husbandry, genotyping, histology, microscopy, and stereotaxic surgery. Must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work as part of a team. Must be comfortable working with mice.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday. Some duties may require coming in on weekends. 
40 hours per week.

Underfill Statement

The possibility of underfilling this position at the Research Laboratory Specialist Intermediate title is possible and will be determined based upon the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant. 

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
