Position Overview

Plans and implements the classroom environment and experiences for young children, including safety and developmentally appropriate learning practices designed partially by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Includes the involvement of parent/guardians.


Essential Job Functions

• Works as a team member with Early Childhood and Education staff, volunteers, parents, and the director in the planning and implementing a variety of lessons and activities that support the preschool curriculum.
• Supervises and monitors subordinates and provides maintenance and security of the preschool.
• Performs all job-related duties and responsibilities in an ethical and professional manner (LCC code of Ethics and National Association for the Education of Young Children Code of Ethical Conduct and Stated Commitment).
• Assists with age specific curricula development, administration and execution in support of the Institutes childcare resource services.
• Ensures that there is appropriate coverage when needed.
• Works with and monitors preschool/children in the lab-learning environment.
• Maintains written reports as required and must document and report health and other needs of the children to the lead teacher or director, inclusive of suspected child abuse.
• Monitors and maintains a clean safe environment for children.
• Ensures rooms, toys and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained.
• Responsible for helping children change soiled clothes.
• Maintains appropriate records of attendance, including breakfast, snack, and lunch counts, and activities.
• Confers with parents and program participants providing information, advice, problem solving assistance and responds to program delivery questions; ensuring follow up.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of childcare facility services and/or staff licensure and certification requirements
• Knowledge of child cognitive, social, and skills development methods and techniques
• Knowledge of age specific activities and nutritional requirements
• Skill in communicating with and instructing children
• Skill in early childhood program development
• Skill in motivating staff and volunteers
• Skill in English composition, grammar and punctuation
• Skill in following oral and written instructions and procedures
• Skill in presenting ideas and concepts orally and in writing
• Skill in using public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and concerns
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, children, parents and the public
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing


Work Environment and Physical Factors

• Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
• The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading and visual inspection.
• The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.


Education, Experience and Licenses

POST EMPLOYMENT CHILD YOUTH AND FAMILY (CYFD) and FOCUS REQUIREMENTS

• The worker must pass a CYFD Background Clearance immediately after beginning employment.
• CPR/First Aid Certification to be obtained upon initial orientation.
• Basic Training hours in health, safety and nutrition completed within three months.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required.
• Three months experience working directly with young children is required.
• 6 credit hours in Early Childhood Education is preferred.
