We have an exciting opportunity for a Special Programs Assistant II located at our campus in Menifee, CA. Under moderate direction of the assigned administrator, the Special Programs Assistant II, CalWORKs performs a variety of specialized technical and administrative duties involved in the coordination, planning and implementation of the CalWORKs program at the Temecula campus.  Major duties include but are not limited to: developing, implementing and maintaining a program to identify and recruit students; coordinate and implement outreach and support services; assist students with a variety of activities; and, provide related program information.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as liaison to on and off-campus agencies
  • Identifies resources and refers special population students to appropriate campus and community support services and programs
  • Performs program in-take procedures; reviews information and determines program eligibility and extent of support in accordance with established guidelines
  • Implements specialized services to CalWORKs students which addresses orientation, advising, student follow-up and intervention
  • Performs a wide range of duties including research, interpretation and application of moderately complex regulations and guidelines
  • Guides CalWORKs students in applying for various services and benefits offered by the College, the community and other government agencies
  • Interviews and communicates with students to provide orientation, answer questions and determine eligibility for program participation and service referrals
  • Develop and implement an outreach component which targets potential under-represented students
  • Prepare and coordinate new student orientations for Temecula campus students every semester
  • Assists with scheduling appointments in Counselor's absence
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Computer skills including spreadsheet, data base and word processing; written and oral communication; ability to travel between campuses; and, ability to read and interpret complex legal and policy materials from federal, state and local level.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary 
The incumbent should possess ability to:
  • Read, write and speak English sufficiently to carry out assignments
  • Provide and coordinate a variety of services and activities to assist CalWORKs students in their academic achievement and personal growth
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Monitor and maintain program budget and make recommendations based upon program needs
  • Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Read and interpret complex legal and policy materials from federal, state and local level
  • Prepare reports, correspondence and related materials using appropriate computer software
  • Travel between campuses
  • Use tact, patience and courtesy
  • Train and provide work direction to others
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those from a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A high school diploma or GED; AND
  2. Two (2) years of professional experience with special programs (i.e. CalWORKs), equivalent to the duties described above; AND
  3. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff

SUBSTITUTIONS

  • The professional experience requirement may be substituted with on-the-job training in a general clerical assistant classification on the basis of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience for every one (1) year of special program experience cited above

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Environment:  Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with travel from site to site.  The incumbent must be able to work in a fast paced office environment with background noise and a high stress level. 

Physical:  Primary function requires sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting and travel from site to site; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach and twist; to lift carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 20 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movements and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. 

Vision:  See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment. 

Hearing:  Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
