SUMMARY

Provide service regarding captioning of video content generated by GRCC for student use, complying with federal mandate.  Coordinate with Media staff to prioritize and caption to current professional standards files that allow online content to be accessible to deaf and hard of hearing.  

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Responsible for transcribing, timing and captioning content for GRCC recorded materials. 
  • Maintain high level of accuracy in finished products, beyond level of accuracy provided by automated services
  • Regularly review current professional standards for media content accessibility.
  • Responsible for communicating with clients within the college regarding captioning requests. 
  • Maintain related data and media.
  • Update process and software as methods for captioning evolve.
  • Make recommendations regarding captioning software and captioning process; constantly look for efficiencies in the captioning process. 
  • Regularly review, evaluate and advise regarding media content accessibility.
  • Communicate regularly with Media staff regarding completion of content.
  • Prioritize and outsource requests as necessary. 
  • Coordinate with Disability Services regarding student accommodation requests.
  • Maintain documented process records and cross-train other Media staff for emergency coverage. 
  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Marginal Job Functions

  • Transcode material if needed
  • Assist in Media related productions and events as assigned by supervisor.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education/License

  • Bachelors degree in Media, Communications, or English related field or comparable combination of relevant education and experience required.

 

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience captioning video content required.

  • Ability to continue repetitive task of captioning/text editing/text review
  • Ability to accurately type for long periods of time

 

Working Conditions

  • Grand Rapids Community College will comply with any mandated health and safety requirements.  Employees will be directed to our GRCC Policy(s) for compliance information.
  • Primarily located in traditional office, isolated to allow for focus on captioning tasks
  • Larger shared departmental space with 10 I.T. Media colleagues
