Work Hours/Schedule: 40 Hours/ 52 Weeks, Monday – Friday, 6:30 AM –  3:00 PM

Compensation: College Employee Benefit Association (CEBA) - Grounds Maintenance

Starting pay: $19.53 an hour

Reports to: Associate Director of Facilities - Operations

SUMMARY

The grounds maintenance position is responsible for all landscaping needs: tree and shrub pruning and trimming; campus irrigation systems; snow plowing and ice melting material application; operation of powered equipment ranging from chain saws to plow trucks, skid-steer loaders and tractors; make minor repair on grounds equipment; familiar with herbicides and appropriate application; available to work anytime necessary during inclement weather; etc.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Experience in operating a snow plowing truck and snow removal equipment
  • Ability to operate a skid-steer.
  • Operate all landscaping equipment, including powered lawnmowers and blowers.
  • Responsible for campus grounds care, maintenance, and repair of lawns, shrubs, trees, weeding, plantings, including fertilization, irrigation systems and associated lawn care and snow plow repair.
  • Plan, layout and organize work activities and assignments in conjunction with the Grounds Manager
  • Provide maintenance and security of all equipment and furnishings
  • Examine and monitor campus grounds on a routine basis
  • Rake and remove grass, tree and shrub cuttings
  • Assist custodial and maintenance staff as directed
  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required, as well as whenever weather conditions dictate campus snow plowing throughout the winter time frame. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Marginal Job Functions

  • Use of pallet jack.
  • Use of scissors lift.
  • Assist the custodial staff as directed.
  • Transport of equipment and furnishings by trailer or truck.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education/License

  • A minimum of a high school degree or GED diploma.
  • National Career Readiness Certificate preferred.

 

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year commercial experience in working landscape maintenance, to include mowing and vehicle snow plowing required.

Equipment Use/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Must be able to use a variety of equipment designed for landscape maintenance and snow removal
  • Must be able to use 4; 6; 8; and 10 ladders
  • Must be able to use and operate edgers, weed whips, etc.
  • Must be able to use a computer to communicate via email
  • Must be able to drive a vehicle

 

Physical Demands

  • Be able to lift as a minimum 50 pounds
  • Be able to work outdoors during all types of weather

 

Mental Demands

  • Must be able to work a 24-hour flexible schedule based on weather conditions/predictions
  • The ability to work with a variety of college staff personnel
  • The ability to provide customer service to faculty, staff, students and the general public

 

Working Conditions

  • Winter and summers schedules are predicated on environmental/weather concerns and may or may not be constant
  • Work alone or with a team
  • Work indoors and outdoors
  • Work with or without heat and air conditioning
