Columbia Basin College ("CBC" or the "College") seeks a Dean for Business and Computer Science who is the line administrator and is responsible to the VPI for administering and coordinating comprehensive programs of instruction for those disciplines, including several bachelors of applied science programs.

The Dean assists with administrative assignments within the instructional program, as required, and participates as a member of the instructional administrative team in the general operation of the instructional program. The Dean for Business and Computer Science reports to the Vice President for Instruction of Professional Technical Education and Instructional Services (VPI).

  • Support the mission, vision and values of CBC through courageous and ethical leadership of the division, as well as in support of other divisions of the College and as a thought leader and team member of an administrative team;
  • Articulate and implement a vision and strategic plan for the Business and Computer Science Division that supports the mission, vision and values of the College and appropriately prioritize and support student access, success and completion;
  • Personify leadership that fosters diversity, equity and inclusion that is transparent, positive, visible and ethical in terms of its service to students and in support of the College's mission, vision, and values;
  • Conduct difficult conversations around employee engagement, individual performance and collective outcomes with the appropriate use of candor and principles of trust, honesty, humility and compassion;
  • Work as part of the College's administrative team in support of shared goals across the College, regardless of administrative unit, making generous assumptions and conducting open-minded analysis of situations that can assist all parties to learn from failures and create successes;
  • Commit to a "Yes, And" culture by demonstrating the value of cohesive, intentional and positive culture that brings out the best in all (i.e., being present and listening, making each other look good, embracing change and failure, and choosing positivity);
  • Work closely with the instructional faculty in the formation, development, evaluation and revision of courses and programs in support of student success;
  • Support faculty in the creation and implementation of appropriate learning environments in face to face and online courses;
  • Cooperate with all deans and directors in establishing, implementing and monitoring offerings to meet College needs (i.e., transfer, vocational, community service and contract training, etc.);
  • Develop and recommend a Division quarterly and annual course schedule to the Vice President for Instruction, including instructor assignments within established parameters;
  • Monitor enrollments and provide the Vice President for Instruction with enrollment reports and recommendations for adjusting the annual schedule;
  • Work in concert with the Strategic Enrollment Management team and other deans to meet state FTE expectations and College enrollment targets;
  • Supervise faculty and staff within division, including but not limited to: supervise work load, provide training, evaluate performance, authorize leave, discipline and resolve conflicts and student complaints;
  • Evaluate faculty, exempt and classified staff through the appropriate college policies, procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements with courageous conversations in which you provide honest, candid and accurate feedback and support to employees with appropriate resources geared toward success regardless of employee type;
  • Assume a major role in recruiting and selecting individuals who are committed to the College's mission, vision and values as full and part-time instructional and non-instructional staff, in accordance with college policies, procedures and the Collective Bargaining Agreements;
  • Develop a preliminary budget for the Division and be responsible for regulating expenditures within the approved budget;
  • Provide status reports on activities within the division, as requested and prepare annual reports to the Vice Presidents for Instruction and other deans reflecting division accomplishments, objectives for the following year, recommendations and suggestions;
  • Provide status reports to the State Board and other funding agencies as needed;
  • Support campus-wide assessment and accreditation efforts and direct Division assessment and accreditation efforts including the development of annual and focused program reviews;
  • Communicate policies and procedures of the College to members of the Division and ensure correct implementation;
  • Schedule regular meetings of the Division and/or of discipline or area sub-groups, as appropriate;
  • Oversee resources and personnel assigned to the division;
  • Arrange for substitutes in case of absence by faculty when advisable;
  • Maintain a current file of all course syllabi for courses taught by the Division;
  • Direct divisional staff to inventory, maintain and safeguard facilities and equipment charged to the Division;
  • Recommend appointments for each program advisory committee for the Division in cooperation with the Vice President for Instruction and work closely with the committees once they are established;
  • Establish and maintain contact with counterparts at other colleges and universities, post-secondary institutions and appropriate individuals at area high schools; appropriate agencies and organizations related to the Division's instructional programs;
  • Coordinate and consolidate the planning, safety and equipping of facilities directly related to the Division with the appropriate officers of the College;
  • Play a major role in planning new instructional buildings and remodeling of existing structures;
  • Assist in the development, updating and the implementation of an instructional strategic plan;
  • Participate in campus-wide activities and committees, as requested;
  • Develop and implement a personal professional development plan;
  • May teach with the approval of the VPI;
  • May have unique instructional assignments as appropriate to division assignment and when requested by the VPI; and
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university;
  • Proven teaching experience or have the equivalent experience in business, industry or public agencies; and
  • Have a minimum of five (5) years supervisory/administrative experience supervising others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Guided Pathways development;
  • Experience in supervising faculty in a higher education setting;
  • Demonstrated substantial working knowledge and achievement in curriculum and program management;
  • Experience in institutional and program level accreditation;
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, conflict resolution, management and organizational skills;
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring staff;
  • Demonstrated sound working knowledge of personal computer hardware/software and the internet;
  • Demonstrated ability in administration and attention to detail.
