Director, Athletics & Recreation

 

DEPARTMENT: Athletics & Recreation/Student Services & Enrollment Management

PRIMARY LOCATION: Fall River

REPORTS TO: Associate Vice President, Student Success

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Oversees area staff as assigned.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Director, Athletics & Recreation provides strategic vision, leadership, and administrative direction to the college's initiatives related to intercollegiate athletic competition and student recreation. The Director ensures delivery of a comprehensive athletics and recreation program that demonstrates a commitment to student success through scholar athlete excellence. The Director works closely with the Student Services and Enrollment Management Leadership Team to positively contribute to the college's recruitment, enrollment, and retention goals. The Director works collaboratively across the college to meet the evolving needs of the Bristol community.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide strategic vision, administrative direction, and direct supervision for Athletics & Recreation; oversee Athletics & Recreation activities at all Bristol locations and online/remote.
  • Create and implement a strategic plan for the intercollegiate athletics program and facilities that meets the needs of the institution; establish and implement short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures for Athletics & Recreation.
  • Serve as Bristol's principal representative for intercollegiate athletics. Foster collaborative relationships with internal and external constituents and stakeholders including, but not limited to: students and alumni; key internal operational areas (Facilities and Business Services, Campus Police, Student & Family Engagement, Advising & Transfer Services, Student Wellness, and campus deans); high school athletics program administrators; local practice and competition venues; and local, regional, and national athletics organizations.
  • Collaborate with Admissions on planning and facilitation of student athlete recruitment events.
  • Hire, supervise, lead, and develop all Athletics & Recreation department staff. Conduct regular performance evaluations to ensure continuous improvement and identify potential opportunities for growth. Work closely with Human Resources to develop staff capabilities and expectations.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive work environment that supports the professional growth of staff while fostering a commitment to service excellence.
  • Assure institutional compliance with policies and procedures as outlined in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Compliance Manual; oversee the NJCAA eligibility and compliance processes including, but not limited to, organizing and maintaining all compliance paperwork and submitting eligibility in accordance with NJCAA by-laws.

 

Assessment, Reporting & Budget

  • Assure alignment between departmental activities and the institutional mission and strategic plan.
  • Provide responsible fiscal oversight and resource management for assigned budgets. Prepare and monitor annual operational budgets for all departmental programs and activities.
  • Explore external funding opportunities to supplement institutional funding of Athletics & Recreation initiatives and programs. Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer and the Bristol Community College Foundation to identify and communicate with potential donors.
  • Coordinate and facilitate events with other areas of the college to promote student, alumni, and community engagement with athletics, including but not limited to, the Birdies for Bayhawks annual golf tournament and campus Athletics Nights.
  • Monitor, evaluate, analyze and enhance operational effectiveness and implement changes as required for continuous improvement. Develop measurable outcomes and benchmarks for improvement in service delivery.
  • Develop and maintain metrics to evaluate and advance the academic success of student-athletes in collaboration with designated advising and success staff.
  • Engage in meaningful data analysis including disaggregation of student data in order to assess equitable outcomes for students. Provide timely reports and analysis to various internal stakeholders, including but not limited to the President's Leadership Team, Student Services and Enrollment Management Leadership Team, Academic Leadership Team, and Strategic Analytics and Institutional Research.
  • Work collaboratively with college leadership to recommend and implement tactics that ensure achievement of prescribed persistence and retention goals, including increases to Fall-to-Fall student retention rate.
  • Infuse and actualize an assessment strategy, in partnership with Institutional Research and Academic Affairs, to measure co-curricular student learning, effectiveness, and satisfaction to improve retention and persistence.

 

Administration

  • Use Bristol's digital communication tools, to include but not limited to Bristol email, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other Bristol social media tools, to advance the college's social media outreach and brand to internal and external constituents.
  • Actively engage with professional organizations to stay current on professional development, higher education trends, and best practices.
  • Maintain all external contracts for Athletics & Recreation.
  • Ensure the booking of facilities for games and practices as required.
  • Coordinate game day administration including but not limited to ensuring presence of athletic trainers and score keepers and access to appropriate materials and equipment.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings.
  • Accurately complete the annual Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act survey in accordance with federal guidelines.
  • Serve on various leadership councils for Student Services and Enrollment Management; lead and serve on various college committees, as needed.

Job Requirements:


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.

  • Minimum of a Master's degree.*
  • Progressive leadership, administrative, and supervisory experience with a minimum of three years of experience in an intercollegiate athletics, student affairs, or student services area within higher education. *
    • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience shall be considered.
  • Thorough knowledge of student development, intercollegiate athletics, and budget management.
  • Successful history of collaboration with others across divisions to build effective relationships.
  • Prior budget management experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for all students through upholding the community college mission and serving the needs of first-generation and historically excluded populations.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated experience creating and implementing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging programming that reflects inclusiveness, adaptiveness, and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with student information systems, event scheduling software, and Microsoft Office 365 applications.
  • Demonstrated commitment to embracing and serving the needs of a diverse community, including the ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
  • Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from practices, competitions, meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends as required.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement: As of January 2022, candidates for employment should be aware that Community College students, faculty, and staff are required to be fully vaccinated. Accordingly, initial employment is dependent upon receipt and verification of full vaccination status records; details of how to fulfill vaccine record verification requirements will be provided during the hire and onboarding process.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior supervisory experience in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Prior experience working at a multi-campus community college.
  • Experience working with one or more of the following software packages: Ellucian Banner, DegreeWorks, Argos, Slate, Maxient, and EAB/Navigate.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and consistent experience in using varied social media outlets on behalf of a business or organization that has proven to increase the digital footprint of the organization's brand.
  • Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English.

POSITION STATUS:
 This is a full-time, non-unit position with benefits, some nights and weekends required.

SALARY: Hiring salary $72,918.55 - $80,488.43, commensurate with education and experience.
