ATLAS Operations Director

Argonne

Job Description

Argonne is seeking a highly qualified Operations Director for the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS).

ATLAS is the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOEs) prime stable beam accelerator facility for low-energy nuclear physics, providing beams of essentially all stable isotopes at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier, as well as a suite of in-flight produced beams and reaccelerated fission-fragment beams. The ATLAS facility hosts approximately 200 to 300 users each, delivering around 6000 hours of beams to three large experimental areas equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation. A further few thousand hours of low-energy beams are available in an additional multi-beam-line area, serving numerous research programs. ATLAS is a dynamic facility, with performance upgrades and new capabilities being added with regularity.

ATLAS resides within the Physics Division (PHY) of Argonne. With a staff of about 100, including over 30 Ph.D. scientists and approximately 20 postdoctoral researchers, PHY’s research and development focuses on the fundamental understanding of the constituents of matter. It has major programs in low-energy nuclear physics, including technical and scientific support of the user and in-house research programs at ATLAS, nuclear theory, medium-energy nuclear physics, fundamental interactions, and accelerator technology, with additional smaller-scale programs in optical trapping of atoms, and applications of nuclear science. The Division is funded mainly by DOE’s Office of Nuclear Physics. A primary mission of PHY is to operate ATLAS as a national user facility for low-energy nuclear physics.

ATLAS is operated by a team of approximately 30 staff spanning control systems, cryogenics, ion sources, operators, electronics, electrical, vacuum systems, and so on. The ATLAS Operations Director will be responsible for leading this team, coordinating day-to-day operations, setting priorities and resource allocation, ensuring operational excellence in line with users' needs and expectations, and meeting the beam-hour targets set by the DOE. The ATLAS Operations Director will also coordinate machine maintenance activities, performance optimization, and upgrades and implementation of new capabilities in coordination with the Scientific Director of ATLAS, PHY management, and key stakeholders. In this role, active participation in ATLAS strategic planning is required. In addition, the ATLAS Operations Director will develop and maintain an excellent and diverse technical staff to support the mission, fostering and maintaining high standards in environmental, safety, health, and quality assurance for all ATLAS activities.

Required Experience:

  • The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in accelerator physics, nuclear physics, or related fields, and 10+ years of experience with various accelerator systems and accelerator facility environments that have been internationally recognized.

  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative abilities with a commitment to excellence in research and operations are a requirement.

  • Experience in managing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships in a large matrix environment of internal and external contacts is necessary.

  • Applications should include a comprehensive curriculum vitae containing publications, awards, patents, and a cover letter highlighting your interest in the role and any key credentials and accomplishments.

  • Fullest consideration will be given to applications received by July 31, 2023.

Argonne offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package. For consideration, please submit an application.
