Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The University of Maryland, Department of Transportation Services is seeking a Parking Enforcement Tow Truck Operator to join our team! The Parking Enforcement Tow Truck Operator provides operational support through upholding and enforcing the parking regulations and restrictions of the universitys parking ordinances.
Responsibilities:
- Enforces parking ordinances in surface and garage lots on institution premises
- Patrolling the campus in a heavy motor vehicle (tow truck) to ensure public compliance with existing parking ordinance
- Taking appropriate actions to include issuing citations, or arranging for vehicles to be towed or relocated
- Identify vehicles, scooters, and bicycles which are in violation of parking regulations
- Checks vehicle license plate numbers against outstanding parking citation lists
- Interpret policies and procedures that govern citation issuance; issue neat, accurate and thorough parking warning notices and citations or arranging for vehicles to be towed or relocated
- Performs a variety of clerical duties required to document and process enforcement actions
- Functions in a lead role to oversee staff performance and ensure the assigned event or shift is operating smoothly and policies and procedures are followed
- Utilizes mobile data terminals and hand-held computers in issuing citations
- Monitors parking lots and directs staff to appropriate parking areas for various events held across campus
- Trains staff in parking enforcement policies and procedures
- Much of the workday will be spent outdoors or in vehicle in various weather conditions
Minimum Qualifications:

Three years of progressively responsible work in a related field.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to learn and interpret campus parking regulations and established procedures.
- Ability to pass exam related to established regulations and procedures; to learn the physical layout of the institution; to read, write and follow oral and written instructions; to interact effectively with the general public; to perform assigned duties under adverse weather conditions; to perform extensive standing, walking; to communicate effectively; to operate two way radios, telephones, mobile data terminals, hand-held computers, and personal computers.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
Conditions of Employment:
- Candidates are required to possess and maintain a valid Maryland Non-Commercial Class C or equivalent drivers license.
- Ability to work the schedule as follows
- Monday – Friday 12:00pm – 8:30pm
- Occasional mandatory weekend/OT work to staff special events such as Football games
- Occasional work to assist with lot closures that may need clearing for construction.
