Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for a part-time Student Activities Specialist in the department of Student Life. The purpose of this position is to coordinate programs and provide operational and administrative assistance to support participation in student engagement programs, to include activities, trips, clubs, recreation and fitness programming.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Strong customer service skills. Ability to operate independently with general direction in developing creative programs and activities for a diverse population. Coordination and administrative skills needed to plan and manage special events and programs. Computer skills are important with knowledge of word processing, database, spreadsheet and presentation software programs. Knowledge of recreational activities and programs. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license and have knowledge of safe driving practices. Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends and non-traditional work hours in support of college and student organization programs. Normal work hours fall between 8am and 6pm. Regular and prompt attendance is essential, and must be able to maintain regular and punctual attendance. Must be able to work effectively and get along with a wide range of people and organizations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a college setting working with students is desired. Experience working in recreation, event planning, or marketing.
