Job Description

The Campus Military and Veterans Program Advisor advises military and veterans students on benefit advising and appropriate course selection as it relates to using their military benefits . This position will support the Annandale Veteran Success Center providing in-person services. The position primarily requires the daily student walk-in advising duties, virtual appointment for military and veterans students. This position will require working one late night duty, per week. The position requires supervising the veterans/federal work-study program, and provide office coverage at other campus locations when necessary.

Duties and Tasks:
  • Advise military/veterans students regarding available veterans educational benefits and advise students with course selections, assisting students with completing necessary forms relating to their military benefits.
  • Provide students with the appropriate resources to ensure student success.
  • Assist veterans and military related students with using the online enrollment certification, monitor enrollment changes, and support the Office of Military and Veterans Services with reporting VA federal requirements.
  • Coordinate outreach efforts to include but not limited to orientation sessions, military/veterans Discovery NOVA Days, programs that support veteran students, and veterans groups and organizations, and plan campus activities to support the campus military program.
  • Work collaboratively with other student service offices, central school certifying officials, and Office of Military and Veterans Services personnel to provide a coordinated effort to support veteran/military students.

 


Essential Functions:
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and advise students of diverse backgrounds and needs in higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise individuals in an educational setting with personal issues that may hinder academic success.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with student retention strategies an initiatives.
  • Knowledge of and belief in the mission of a comprehensive community college, particular as it relates to advising and student support services.
  • Demonstrated and understanding of student assessment, education and career planning, registration and retention principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated oral, written, group communication and customer relation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems using strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast paced student environment.
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of contemporary computer application software to include word processing and spreadsheets, and other information technology applications such as those that manage college student information data.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the DoD active duty, Reserve, National Guard, Coast Guard, veterans an family members education benefits.
  • Ability to work accurately with details with a 10% error rating, construct records both paper and electronic, make date entries using Navigate, track curriculum changes, and safeguard records from initial enrollment through graduation.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize Perceptive Content for record storage and retrieval.

 

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

 

KSA's/Required Qualifications
Required KSAs:
  • In-depth knowledge of both military/veteran education benefits and higher education communities.
  • In-depth knowledge of DoD/VA regulations concerning higher education and certifying programs.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of higher education enrollment processes, specifically for military/veterans programs.
  • Ability to define problems and apply problem solving techniques to complex educational and billing issues and to effectively present complex information to lay audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, and anticipate and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to accurately perform detail work with numerical data utilizing prescribed procedures.
  • Ability to analysis data and apply professional principles and standards for recordkeeping.
  • Ability to research, investigate, analyze, reconcile, and evaluate data.
  • Demonstrated computer competency with data entry, database, spreadsheet, and word processing programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with a diverse public and to handle complex situations under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a one-to-one basis with students.
  • Ability to interpret and apply Virginia Community College System (VCCS), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and college policies and procedures as they relate to student services and faculty support.
  • Ability to interpret and explain academic and administrative policies and procedures.

 


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Business Administration, Human Services, Counseling, Social Services or a related field; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Some experience and knowledge of veterans programs and procedures.
  • Some experience with PC software applications.

 

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in Business Administration, Human Services, Counseling, Social Services or a related field.
  • Experience advising health/medical related programs; working in a college setting and advising military/veterans population.
  • Prior U.S. Military Services a plus with Honorable discharge or spouse/dependent.
  • Experience working in a college setting.
