Job Description:

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

The goals of the Workforce Development division are consistent with the mission and goals of the college and the Vice President for Workforce Development.

The Position:

Responsible for providing adult career coaching services and case management to participants supporting the Strengthening Community Colleges Training grant program. Provides information on careers, career pathways, and educational requirements to ensure it aligns with one of the targeted industry sectors and results in an industry-recognized credential. Facilitates employment workshops, workplace readiness, and professional soft skills training. Ensures participants identify a training program and apply for admission, enroll in coursework and are successful. Provides supportive coaching throughout program and coordination with support services to ensure program retention and completion. Participates in individual and small group employability skills activities. Assists participants in navigating the workforce system, connecting the student to supportive services available on campus and in the community through mental health services, or other organizations. Develops transition materials and resources to assist students. Provides placement and job-retention services to the participant throughout their support employment experience and work with employers to resolve any barriers that arise. Individual reports to the Williamsburg Trade Center Coordinator.

This position is funded by a Department of Labor grant.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree in counseling, education, communications, human resources, social services, or combination of related education and experience in program management and customer service.
  • Ability to assess the skills, needs, interests, and aptitudes of clients and provide personalized advice and guidance on career development and postsecondary options.
  • Knowledge of specific competencies needed for career readiness, both for specific occupations and for job readiness in general, including but not limited to job search skills, resume writing skills, interview skills, and professional soft skills.
  • Ability to work with Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) to share knowledge of labor market trends and opportunities.
  • Ability to develop individual action plans with individual clients.
  • Understanding of the specific needs of area employers for high demand occupations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to help engage, provide support, and motivate customers, as well as to engage business partners effectively.
  • Effective communication and marketing/outreach skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the network of available resources and how to access them.
  • Effective problem-solving skills, coaching, career counseling and facilitation skills.
  • Knowledge of labor market trends and opportunities
  • Knowledge of training and coaching strategies effective to strengthening the "soft" skills of participants.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with individuals with from underserved populations.
  • Strong group presentation, coaching and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to build networks and obtain cooperation from a variety of partners, including business and industry and entities operating within Virginia's Workforce Network.
  • Working knowledge of the workforce development system: its structure, operations, and linkages between required partners.
  • Ability to build networks and establish effective working partnerships with a variety of partners, including business and industry and workforce development system
  • Proficient in use Microsoft Office and social media.
  • Understand goal setting, action planning, and implementing an action plan.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others.
  • Ability to function independently with limited supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in higher education.
