Work Experience
Minimum of two years of successful laboratory experience at a college or in industry.
Preferred Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in a STEM field. Experience in tracking inventory; maintaining laboratory budgets, chemical handling, and solution preparation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System
2. Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology (Microsoft Office, learning management systems, e-mail, Internet, student information databases, library research databases)
3. Competence in oral and written communication skills
4. Competence in basic chemical and biological techniques
5. Ability to be organized, accurate, and punctual with paperwork and assigned tasks
6. Ability to communicate and coordinate with multiple individuals in the department in order to ensure different laboratories on different days and times (including Saturday) can run successfully on multiple campuses.
7. Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, colleagues, and community groups
8. Ability to establish and maintain effective, civil, and respectful communication and interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community
9. Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality
10. Knowledge of safety standards (OSHA and state regulations) as they apply to instructional environments
11. Driving short distances, e.g. between Durham Tech campuses
Essential Functions
The Science Lab Manager will be responsible for maintaining all science laboratories, as assigned. These responsibilities include maintaining a space that is safe and effective for teaching and learning, inventorying, ordering, and storing necessary instructional supplies and materials for both Main and the Orange County Campuses. The Science Lab Manager will work closely with his or her Discipline Chair, the laboratory coordinator, and other faculty on matters related to and for the benefit of the Science and Mathematics Department and its students. More specifically, and consistent with the terms and conditions of appointment as stipulated in the contract of employment
Job Duties
The Science Lab Manager is accountable for the duties listed below:
1. Ensure that all assigned science labs are adequately arranged, supplied, and equipped for timely, safe, and effective teaching and learning;
a. This includes significant communication and coordination with all faculty to plan and organize all lab sections to be supported, as well as chemical handling and solution preparation.
2. Ensure that consumable and non-consumable instructional supplies and equipment required for laboratory procedures are procured and available for timely instruction;
a. This includes tracking inventory, supply orders, and maintaining a detailed laboratory budget for all science labs.
3. Coordinate the proper maintenance of laboratory equipment for all science labs;
a. This includes contacting proper servicing departments or companies as well as maintaining servicing contracts and records.
4. Coordinate assembly of kits for at-home labs;
5. Maintain training and other professional development opportunities on- or off-campus and stay current with developments in the field;
6. Assume responsibility for proper waste maintenance and disposal for all science laboratories.
7. Help direct and manage work-study students.
8. Collaborate with the Discipline Chair(s) and/or Dean to manage the determined expense budgets for both Science Instructional Supplies and Science Equipment.
9. Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the chair, department dean, chief instructional officer, or president, in meeting the needs of the department, division, and college;

Required Working Hours
A minimum of a 40-hour work week as determined with the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include evening and weekend hours.Hiring Range
