The Ohio State University College of Public Health and the Center for Tobacco Research (CTR) at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow for a research training experience focused on tobacco product emissions testing. The fellow will work primarily with Professor Marielle C. Brinkman, Doctor Ahmad El Hellani, Doctor Andrew A. May, and Doctor Theodore L. Wagener on research related to tobacco product emissions testing in the context of tobacco regulatory science. Opportunities are available for interdisciplinary mentoring and training in other tobacco research areas, as our faculty expertise and institutional resources range from benchtop science to population-level policy and regulation. The environment of The Ohio State University College of Public Health, and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Center for Tobacco Research provide access to unparalleled resources to enrich fellows’ research training experience.

Training will be individualized for the fellow to develop competencies in tobacco

research and specific skills and expertise tailored to the fellow’s research interests. In addition to individualized mentoring, the fellow will have opportunities to take part in seminars and workshops that will provide training in preparing research grant applications, tobacco-related research methods, advanced statistical techniques, and other areas.

The fellow will be part of an interdisciplinary research team and will gain experience leading experiments focused on tobacco product emissions testing, including developing and implementing experimental protocols for characterizing mainstream particle and aerosol size distributions from combustible and electronic tobacco products, and conducting and overseeing data collection, including quality control monitoring procedures. The fellow will also gain experience in intellectual property development, technology commercialization, and leading the preparation of abstracts for presentation at national conferences and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication using data from ongoing and recently completed studies supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration Center for Tobacco Products. The fellow will also receive support and be encouraged to develop their own grant applications (e.g., F series, K series, or institutional research grants). Additional activities will be determined by the fellow and mentor. Initial appointment will be for 1 year, with

renewal for subsequent year(s) contingent on progress and available resources to support continued training.


Additional Information:

Required Education

The candidate must have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Sciences, Physics, Aerosol Science, or a closely related field.

Required Experience 

Experience developing methods for and conducting targeted and untargeted chemical analysis using ICP-MS, Mass Spectrometry, Liquid & Gas Chromatography techniques. Skilled with validating developed methods, and adept at instrument operation and calibration Candidates should be well published and adept with the common software environments needed for research analysis and manuscript generation such as MS office, Google sheets, SPSS, and Statistica.

Desired Experience

Experience in tobacco research; real-time aerosol analysis; particle and aerosol characterization; size-selective gravimetric analysis; excellent communication and writing skills; candidate must work well in a team environment.

Pay Range

$55,000 - $70,000 Annually
