Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, is seeking a full-time faculty member in Theatre Performance to fill a position beginning August 2023 in the Performing Arts Department of the Visual, Performing and Media Arts (VPMA) area.  We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner.  This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. 

Montgomery College is a public, fully accredited by both Middle States and the National Accreditation of Schools of Music (NASM). The College is dedicated to student success and is widely recognized for the quality and scope of its academic programs across three campuses in Montgomery County, Maryland.

The Visual, Performing, and Media Arts (VPMA) area has outstanding programs in the performing arts. In addition to exceptional educational experiences offered in the various performing arts classes, the performing arts department also has extensive co-curricular offerings that include 3 full productions a year, scene showcase, student clubs, and other performance opportunities. The VPMA area offer over 40 concerts, 25 exhibitions, and 5 theatre productions and dance performances each year.  Montgomery College has a long history of successfully preparing students for transfer to four-year institutions such as Towson University, the University of Maryland, Howard University, and many more, both regionally and beyond.

We are seeking a full-time Faculty Member in Theatre Performance and Theatre Studies for the Performing Arts Department beginning August 2023 who is excited by this level of excellence and is committed to student success. Introduction to Theatre, Fundamentals of Acting and Intermediate Acting courses are essential foundational courses that are required by Theatre majors.  In addition, these courses are also of critical importance in the College’s General Education program. Other possible courses include Movement for the Performer, Voice and Diction, Script Analysis and other specialties.

Montgomery College and the VPMA areas are committed to the ongoing creative and scholarly work of our faculty.  The close proximity to DC is a tremendous asset in this regard.  Currently, our faculty are engaged in projects at many of the celebrated theatre institutions in our own backyard, including Olney Theatre, the Mosaic Theatre, Ford’s Theatre, Toby’s Dinner Theatre and Signature Theatre, among others. This connection to the vibrant art scene in the region also allows opportunities to bring guest artists from the professional world onto our campuses and into our classrooms. 

The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a multi-cultural environment and will welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities. Faculty duties include classroom instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, artistic leadership, committee work and utilizing instructional technology.

Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, on-line, and/or hybrid, during days, evenings, and weekends. Montgomery College has three campuses as well as a virtual campus and instructs a few select courses at area high schools. Faculty may be assigned to any of these campuses.

The majority of our courses use open educational resources (OERs) to yield cost savings for the students and the most current content for faculty. Incoming faculty will utilize OERs in alignment with the other faculty in the discipline. 

The faculty assignment begins August 2023.

Duties include but are not limited to:  

  • Teach a combination of Theatre Performance and Theatre studio courses every semester. Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments and handouts; evaluate and grade student exams, assignments, and papers. Incorporate the use of an educational enterprise platform (Blackboard) and other relevant technology into instruction, including inexpensive or no-cost resources in the development and delivery of instruction.
  • Teach a varied schedule of courses that may include day, night, early morning, weekend classes, compressed courses, and virtual courses.  Opportunities may exist for teaching summer classes.
  • Teach at any of the three physical campuses (TPSS, Rockville, and Germantown), or online through Distance Learning at Montgomery College.
  • Serve as the Theatre and Dance Coordinator for the Performing Arts Department.
  • Provide artistic leadership for the College Performing Arts Series
  • Apply culturally relevant pedagogies to the teaching and learning process.
  • Engage students in their learning through active, collaborative learning approaches.
  • Understand and commit to student success including increasing retention, transfer, and graduation and creating an equitable and inclusive learning environment for diverse students.
  • Advise students in Theatre and General Studies HACL (Humanities, Arts, Communication and Languages) about program curriculum, transfer options, and professional/careers opportunities.
  • Serve on, or lead, department, discipline, campus-wide and college committees, and take an active role in supporting the Performing Arts Department promotional initiatives.
  • Actively participate in the College’s General Education program.
  • Engage in the expansion and implementation of assessments for courses, programs and learning outcomes with the goal of increasing student success.
  • Commitment to work collegially and to support an influx of broad and distinct ideas that increase learning and strengthen the impact of our institution to collectively achieve a just experience for all.
  • Maintain an active program of professional development and participate in professional organizations and activities.

Additional Information:

  • A candidate on Optional Practical Training (OPT) is not eligible for this position. 
  • A candidate with an international degree is required to have an U.S. degree equivalency prior to application.

Required Qualifications:  

  • An MA in Theatre
  • One-year of equivalent full-time teaching experience.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion through teaching or professional practice.
  • A record of professional creative and/or scholarly work.
  • Faculty members are expected to have access to a personal computer with virus protection that can connect to the internet outside of the work location (i.e., office, classroom, college campus). Montgomery College (MC) provides an MC e-mail account and access to the learning platform, password-protected faculty sections of the website, college listservs, and other faculty communications tools 
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship  

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • An MFA or PhD in Theatre
  • At least 3-5 years full-time teaching
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Experience in acting, directing, movement or voice.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the community college mission, and a commitment to student success.
  • A record of excellence in creative practice that supports a culturally diverse student population and educational environment.
  • Experience supporting students to overcome barriers to academic success. 

Hiring Range: $62,319 to $91,218
