Job Description

The Business and Industry Liaison ensures comprehensive business and economic development services are provided in Watauga County, including assisting with small businesses, customized training, work-based learning, and career opportunities. This position serves as a liaison between local business and industry, external and community partners, and the college's Business and Career Services department. Additionally, this position will build and strengthen relationships with the Watauga County Economic Development Commission, Chamber of Commerce, and High Country Workforce Development Board in order to facilitate collaborations that drive economic development

 

Examples of Duties

 

Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides high-quality business and career services to students, faculty, staff, employers, and external agencies within the college's service area.
  • Assists with identifying the needs of new and existing businesses; customizes anddesigns training opportunities supporting growth and workforce development by working with small business owners and the community.
  • Coordinates counseling, training, guidance, and resource information for start-ups, existing businesses, and potential new businesses within the service area.
  • Markets Small Business Center programs to internal and external partners by delivering presentations, literature, schedules, and brochures to business community.
  • Assists with the implementation of the college's career services opportunities.
  • Promotes college programs and training opportunities to familiarize business and industry with the collective services offered through the college.
  • Collaborates with community leaders and agencies to assist with recruitment and retention of business and industry within the college service area of Watauga County.
  • Partners with college departments to ensure all faculty and staff are aware of the opportunities available for students through the Business and Career Services department.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director, Watauga Campus, to identify opportunities to host economic development, business support, and career services activities on the Watauga Campus.
  • Performs administrative duties within assigned program areas; recommends improvements in workflow, procedures, and use of equipment and forms.


Marginal Functions:

  • Serves on standing and ad hoc committees and focus groups; researches and develops recommendations related to academic and instructional programs; maintains contacts with business, industry, and professional organizations to keep instructional programs current.
  • Participates in professional development activities and required employee training; maintains relevant credentials to instruct selected courses.
  • Represents the college in the community and outside organizations; attends business-related events (ribbon cutting, open house, etc.) as appropriate in Watauga County.
  • Supports the college's mission, vision, and core values by adhering to all policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the development and delivery of public information efforts; supports college functions and cultural activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Working Conditions

 

Knowledge of:

  • Communication and dissemination techniques.
  • Business principles involved in strategic planning and coordinator of people and resources.
  • Principles and techniques of instruction.
  • Principles and techniques of implementing diversity, equity, inclusion, and globalization within courses and programs.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Customer needs assessments and meeting quality standards for services
  • Safe work practices and procedures.
  • Operational characteristics of equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
  • The mission, goals, and objectives of CCC&TI (Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute).
  • Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment.
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Ability to:

  • Interpret and apply college and assigned division goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Contribute to the teaching and learning of mission, goals, and objectives which complement those of the college.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Environmental Conditions:

The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office or classroom workspace and working closely with others.

The employee must maintain the office and teaching environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, and ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment.

Physical Conditions:

Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following: standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and extended exposure to computer screens.

The employee must maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception for making observations, reading, and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously.

Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel.

Scheduling Conditions:

This is a full-time, 12-month position, located at the Boone Chamber of Commerce site, working Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm. This position generally works daytime hours, but has the potential for evening or weekend hours.

Traveling Conditions:

Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites, may be needed. Out-of-state travel is limited, but may be required for training and conferences

 

Experience and Training

 

Experience:

A minimum of three years of related experience working in small business and industry, career development, career counseling, workforce development, and/or in a career center.

Training:

Associate degree from an accredited college is required. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
