Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Development, Counseling, Adult Education, or another related field

Work Experience

Four years of successful work experience in student development and support services in a higher education setting; knowledge of career exploration and counseling practices; familiarity with admissions, orientation, and recruitment strategies; evidence of supervisory experience; organizational planning to create and improve advising services and enrollment processes to meet goals in the college’s strategic plan.

Essential Functions

The director is primarily responsible for providing leadership for the coordination, setup, effective management, assessment, and process improvement of advising and orientation functions, including incorporating the new advising model under One-College. The director will also be accountable for working strategically in a cross-functional role with all other leadership within the division, and other divisions/departments across campus, to ensure cohesive and efficient alignment of processes and procedures that embodies an equity-minded approach to supporting all students.

Job Duties


  • Provide oversight of advising and orientation processes;
  • Provide supervision of advising processes for the Advising Services Office including, but not limited to, the dissemination of the information related to these functions;
  • Provide advisor training and professional development to all faculty and staff, verification of placement requirements, academic advisor case management assignments, and other comprehensive advising and orientation supports and services;
  • Assist with resolving advising and placement concerns, answer questions in relation to official student information, and mitigate student requests and needs;
  • Supervise all Advising Services staff. Ensure that employees create a welcoming environment while providing positive advising supports, respond to correspondence in a timely and courteous manner, provide accurate and up-to-date information, and respond to other communication demands regarding questions about onboarding during critical deadlines for advising, registration, and enrollment periods;
  • Implement student-centered workflow processes to ensure students are offered all options offered by the college that meet their specific and unique needs. Specifically, implement improvement strategies within acceptable compliance regulations to reduce the amount of time from the point of request for services to delivery;
  • Assist in the implementation, training, coordination, and management of technical support for all advising processes and practices in Durham Tech’s student information system;
  • Develop expertise and maintain current knowledge of all student information systems used to troubleshoot problems and provide solutions to the college’s operations. Utilize, re-design, and implement processes to automate advising workflow tasks.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement innovative technology strategies to facilitate efficient support and responses to students.
  • Align the services provided with the college’s goals to increase enrollment, persistence, goal completion, livable wage employment options, and academic success of students;
  • Utilizing data to inform the best practices and support employees and students.
  • Build and maintain strategic collaborations through the one-college model approach to ensure all stakeholders are integrated and informed about support and services for our students.
  • Identify and Implement a career assessment tool to support all continuing education and curriculum students. Collaborate with Human Resources Development in adopting a career assessment tool that can be used by the entire college to support student careers and interest aligning with a suitable academic career path.
  • Frequently review the admissions, advising, orientation, and placement information found on the college’s website, in consultation with division leadership, and provide updated and accurate information to the college’s Marketing and Communications department;
  • Improve advising support by implementing and adapting to the changing needs of our diver student population.
  • Maintain website information given to the public via the college’s website and other sources of communication to reflect the accuracy of processes and compliance with state board code, NCCCS office mandates, and college policy;
  • Maintain complete office records, as needed; process reports, forms, schedules, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner, checking for the accuracy and correctness of all data;
  • Manage unit budget and expenditures;
  • Supervise, coach/mentor, and evaluate all direct reports;
  • Identify and recommend professional development opportunities;
  • Maintain required personnel information on administrative personnel; and
  • Other projects as assigned by the dean, vice president, or president.

Required Working Hours
