Montgomery College, Rockville Campus-Art Department, has an immediate need for a full-time Instructional Lab Coordinator within the Visual, Performing, Media Arts (VPMA) area. The work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., occasional evening and weekend hours may be required as needed. This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 27 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. The Instructional Laboratory Coordinator oversees and coordinates the daily operations and activities of assigned instructional laboratories (Art Studios) and instructional spaces, directly supporting the Rockville and Germantown Art Department. The incumbent follows specific guidelines developed by the supervisor/faculty in providing instructional support in the laboratory and the completed work is reviewed for adherence to the guidelines and accuracy of the information provided.

Job Description

Duties include but are not limited to:

Coordinate and maintain the digital resources of the Rockville and Germantown Art Departments and function as the main point of contact with Information Technology.

  • Initiate and/or track all IT Service Desk requests regarding instructional computer problems.
  • Maintain an inventory list of all hardware and software in the Instructional Lab areas of the Art Department.
  • Coordinate and/or perform scheduled maintenance checks of all instructional IT equipment.
  • Maintain Rockville and Germantown Faculty remote instruction peripheral equipment inventory, and loaner MacBook and iPad check-out equipment.
  • Maintain digital exhibition equipment and setup, this includes digital projectors, digital media players, TV’s, iMacs, and audio equipment.
  • Research and recommend the purchase of hardware and software appropriate to the Art Department instructional labs. Assist faculty with troubleshooting specialized software IT will not support.

Primary oversight of Ceramic Equipment and related components.

  • Maintains and makes minor repairs to both the electric and gas kilns, and all accessories, such as kiln furniture, shelves, and ware carts.
  • Maintains potters’ wheels, slab rollers, pug mill, 3D printer, and other ceramic equipment.
  • Monitors glaze ingredient inventory and mixes bulk glazes for use in the ceramic studio.
  • Loads and unloads ceramic ware kilns with student greenware, bisque, and glazed art projects.
  • Administers ceramic ware kiln firings and coordinates scheduling with Ceramic and Sculpture faculty coordinators.

Act as Lab Safety Coordinator with Facilities, Public Safety, and the College Office of Environmental Safety in providing a safe learning environment for students and faculty.

  • Coordinate with the Office of Environmental Safety and Area Coordinators ensuring that an active inventory of Safety Data Sheets is maintained and uploaded, within the Rockville and Germantown Art Departments.
  • Assist faculty and Environmental Safety, with scheduled removal of hazardous waste and acquiring appropriate PPE.
  • Demonstrate when appropriate, the safe and proper use of tools and power equipment to faculty and students.
  • Retain OSHA Authorized General Industry Trainer certification for; ensuring well-informed occupational and environmental safety training practices for students and faculty, keeping abreast with modifications to OSHA standards and relative General Industry updates, practice, and promoting safety in the workplace.

Provide instructional support to Rockville and Germantown Art Departments.

  • Aid in determining solutions and resolving multiple issues, which arise that would impede the normal operation and instructional programs of the Art Department.
  • Communicate and work with Art Department faculty, college personnel, contractors, visiting artists, students, and others involved with the Art Department in this capacity.
  • Assist in providing support for new initiatives, events, and resources being added and incorporated into the Departments' programs and facilities.

Acts as Back-up Contact and Servicer for Supplies and Equipment.

  • Ensure that all materials, furniture, equipment, and instructional supplies are delivered to the appropriate area.
  • Coordinate and schedule with College Facilities, the Art Department faculty, and commercial vendors, the installation, maintenance, and repair of new and existing equipment for labs and offices within the instructional class schedule. Repair equipment directly, when possible.
  • Research, recommend, obtain quotes, and directly purchase new equipment for studio labs per Chair or Area Coordinator requests.
  • Maintain inventory records of tools and equipment, an digital resource assets.

Provide specialized support specific to “Special Projects” and/or “Project Requests” for collegewide visual and media arts departments.

  • Fulfill approved Project Requests by visual and media arts Faculty that cannot be completed by College Facilities and/or are cost-prohibitive to be contracted out.
  • Support the annual ArtWalk on both Rockville and Germantown campuses. Assist Special Projects Coordinator with, setting out signage, installing the Banner, and assisting faculty and students with large outdoor installations.
  • Support Rockville and Germantown Artist-in-Residence programs by; tending to the needs of the artist and students participating in workshops, assist in transforming the Gallery space into an environment envisioned by the visiting artist, purchase supplies and construct jigs and aides for demonstrations and workshops and help solve unforeseen problems.

Act as Figure Model Coordinator for Rockville and Germantown Campuses.

  • Coordinate model schedule with Faculty to augment class instruction and accommodate specific instructional needs.
  • Coordinate up to 15 Temp-Staff employees to maintain the Figure Drawing, Sculpture, and Painting programs for the Art Department. Contact, schedule, and track performance for each employee, including hiring for both Rockville and Germantown Campuses. Discipline or fire models showing poor performance or inappropriate behavior.
  • Act as Account Monitor for the Rockville and Germantown Art Department budget for paying Temp staff as models. Monitor the budget and troubleshoot payment problems. Contact and coordinate with Payroll to resolve model payment discrepancies and update resolve pay issues.
  • Maintain spending records and balance the Department budget allocated funds for model Temp Staff. Resolve budget discrepancies with Accounts Payable. Keep the Art Department Chair informed as to budget status, and conflicts or problems related to models, their payment, relations with faculty, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Art in Art or Art-related field or Bachelor of Fine Arts, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, and techniques of assigned subject area work, tools, equipment and materials, and hazard/safety precautions. Considerable knowledge of instructional technology, equipment and educational materials employed in assigned instructional laboratory, and administrative practices and procedures, including purchasing and record keeping.
  • Skill in communicating information about the subject area and working effectively with others. Skill in using word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and budgeting programs, e-mail, the internet, etc., and planning and organizing laboratory and shop sessions. Ability to operate an instructional laboratory; to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish work assignments, using personal computers and instructional technology.
  • Four years of experience performing instructional assistant/associate duties.
  • A valid driver’s license and evidence of a good driving record may be required.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Salary Range: $29.58 to $38.45 (hourly).  Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity
