Summary

For over 70 years, the Survey Research Center (SRC) at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research (ISR) has been a national and international leader in interdisciplinary social science research involving the collection or analysis of data from scientific sample surveys. Survey Research Operations (SRO) is the data collection unit of the SRC.  The Director, Technical Services Group is the senior leader of SRO's 40+ person Technology Services Group (TSG)--responsible for the development, delivery, and support of innovative technical systems, tools and processes used to manage survey and data collection operations on behalf of research investigators at the University of Michigan and elsewhere. You will report to the Director of Survey Research Operations. After a period of orientation, it is possible to request a hybrid schedule with at least three days per week worked on site.

Responsibilities*

  • Guide and inspire a diverse technical team responsible for survey and system programming, data management, server and database administration and other technical support services.
  • Collaborate with SRO and SRC leaders and investigators to develop, champion and oversee a technology and software acquisition and development strategy that aligns with the SRC business strategy and the evolving technical needs of new and long-standing research clients and projects.
  • Participate, with other subunit directors, in SRO's leadership team and governance of the unit.
  • Refine and oversee resource management and project assignment processes in our matrixed project delivery environment.
  • Lead senior TSG staff in the provision of technical and system advice and guidance to research investigators and SRO project leaders.
  • Direct TSG staff hiring, on-boarding, training, and performance evaluation processes.
  • Oversee TSG sub-unit leaders in charge of software development, data management and technical support services.
  • Collaborate with other SRC and University technical teams to ensure SRO and TSG system security and regulatory compliance.
  • Stay up to date with the latest technology developments and modern software development methodologies necessary to support the evolving needs of SRO's clients and projects.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and collaboration across TSG teams responsible for the development and maintenance of new and legacy management and reporting systems.
  • Prepare, review, and monitor the TSG operating budget.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience or certifications.
  • 10 years or more relevant work experience in information technology that may include: system design, implementation strategies, process improvement, project management, production support, and systems development methodology.
  • 5 or more years experience in managing or leading technology delivery teams to include responsibility for strategic planning, customer relationship management, project management, goal setting, resource planning and scheduling, and management experience that includes recruiting, mentoring, career development and performance management, or team building.
  • Experience developing or leading the development of enterprise applications.
  • Experience building and leading teams through significant organizational or technological change.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Leadership experience in a project-based technology services environment.
  • Strong knowledge of software development principles and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of both code-first and database-driven development approaches.
  • C# / .NET development experience.
  • Experience developing mobile applications.
