Provide piano accompaniment for the applied music program, choral groups, dance classes, voice classes, opera productions, stage productions and/or special events. This position reports to the Dean of Fine Arts.
Assist instructor in providing accompaniment for the applied music program, choral groups, dance classes, opera workshops, stage productions, voice classes, rehearsals, and soloist auditions.
Lead choral, opera productions and/or stage productions, and sectional rehearsals at the direction of the instructor.
Accompany groups or soloists performing in programs on or off campus.
Assist instructors by conducting individual rehearsals with students in preparation for performances for the applied music program, dance or voice classes, or for opera production or stage production performances.
Prepare accompaniment recordings for student practice.
Improvise and perform music for dance classes with appropriate rhythm by watching the movement of dancers. Create and sustain progressions of mixed meter and irregular rhythmic patterns. Adapt musical interpretation with sensitivity to dance movement.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or higher in music or piano and documented experience as an accompanist and/or performer.
Knowledge/Areas of Expertise:
Music theory including fundamentals for musical periods and styles.
Historical performance practices and styles related to piano technique required for standard choral, instrumental and vocal repertoire or dance classes.
Knowledge of terminology relating to ballet, jazz, and modern dance.
Sight-read choral music and classical, folk, modern, musical theatre or popular music.
Provide accompaniment for choral music and classical, folk, modern, musical theatre or popular music.
Understand and follow oral and visual directions from a conductor or understand and follow directions and demonstrations from a dance instructor.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
Licenses or Other Requirements:
Valid California driver's license.
Sitting long periods of time when providing piano accompaniment.
Repetitive use of upper extremities including repetitive hand motion and/or related hand coordination activities.
SALARY RANGE: $4,525 per month.
Employees contribute 7% of their earnings toward the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
These positions are designated as regular, full-time, ten-month classified. Work week will be Monday through Friday, hours will vary. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory employment verification, fingerprint check, tuberculosis and physical examinations.
