POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Responsible for day-to-day maintenance of plant materials and facilities.

  • Position is 12 hours (three, four-hour days a week) with some flexibility.  Adherence to an agreed upon schedule is required.

  • Intended as a year-long (spring through summer) practicum for SSC Landscape horticulture students or recent graduates of the LHO program.

  • Minimum of six months commitment is preferred.

  • Required to staff retail nursery open dates, including 7 to 8 Saturdays and Thursdays in Spring.  The retail sales Saturdays are required.

  • Maintain the Garden Center @ South social media presence.

  • Ability to self-direct and work independently desired.

  • Work with, students, volunteers and other interns.

  • Work with Nursery/Garden Center/Greenhouse Coordinator (nursery coordinator) and LHO instructors to facilitate use of the greenhouse/nursery for the LHO program

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Oversee and/or work to ensure the continued good health, growth and development of all the plants, which includes but is not limited to: watering, weeding, propagating, planting, pruning and moving (to protect plants from environmental extremes and display them for sale).  All activities involved with promotion, presentation, display, signage and transfer of goods to customers.

  2. Maintain clean and safe nursery/garden center/ greenhouse, which includes, but is not limited to, raking, sweeping, weeding, mulching, laying gravel and cleaning up litter or potential hazards.  This includes aesthetics, safety, and cleanliness.

  3. Perform plant care activities in accordance with Landscape Horticulture Program IPM policy and EnviroStar goals.  This is a pesticide free facility.

  4. Develop and implement effective strategies to achieve marketing, merchandising, sales and plant production priorities.

  5. Maintain the Garden Center @ South social media presence.

  6. Plan, set up, prepare for, and implement retail Garden Center open dates (sales).

  7. This position is required to staff retail nursery open dates, including 7 to 8 Saturdays and Thursdays in Spring.  Garden Center is open 10 am to 3 pm.  Retail sales Saturdays are required.

  8. Work with nursery/garden center /greenhouse staff to complete tasks and duties.

  9. Recruit and supervise volunteers, interns, and students to ensure safe, accurate completion of tasks.

  10. Maintain records for associated with plant production and retail sales.

  11. Inventory & maintain tools, equipment and other nursery & greenhouse supplies.

  12. Assist Nursery Coordinator in assessing needs; ordering and stocking of plant material and supplies.

  13. Communicate with and support LHO instructors regarding classes' use nursery, greenhouse and garden center areas.

  14. Communicate with and support SSC administration, security, facilities, and instructional departments' use of the nursery/garden center/greenhouse.

  15. Take prompt action to resolve any potential safety hazards to visitors or volunteers and advise Nursery Coordinator and LHO Dean of any recommended repairs, improvements or policies and implement decisions quickly.

  16. Interact with visitors and respond to questions about the nursery/garden center/greenhouse and horticulture, the role of individual plants and other questions about the nursery production and sales areas.

  17. Keep records of work accomplished, including legally required records for pesticide & fertilizer use.

  18. Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & ABILITIES:

  • Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from the Landscape Horticulture Program.

  • Preferred, but not required, completion of, or enrollment in, the following courses (or equivalent work/volunteer experience):  Soils, Horticulture Science, Pruning, Greenhouse Operations, Production & Marketing, Plant ID, IPM/IWM, and Propagation.

  • Possess excellent people skills.

  • Be a team player.

  • Self-motivated (self-starter)

  • Good organizational skills.

  • Willing and able to work in all types of weather.

  • Willing to gain experience in overseeing individuals, groups and volunteers.

  • Interest in developing an understanding of nursery/garden center/greenhouse management

  • Previous supervision experience is a plus.

  • Ability to self-direct and work independently desired.
