Summary Statement

An incumbent is responsible for preparing a variety of surfaces and applying protective and decorative coatings such as paints, varnish, or stain to the interior/exterior of buildings and other objects.

Nature and Scope

An incumbent reports to a technical supervisor and may supervise subordinate personnel. An incumbent carries out assignments in accordance with standard painting practices.

Principal Accountabilities

An incumbent may perform any combination of the below listed accountabilities:

1. Sands, scrapes, washes or dusts surfaces in preparation for application of stain, protective and/or decorates coatings. Removes old and/or existing finish.

2. Applies stain, protective and decorative coatings using appropriate tools (i.e. brush, roller, rags or spray equipment).

3. Patches walls, putties nail holes and caulks cracks in buildings using appropriate materials and tools (i.e. spackle, putty, caulking compound, putty knives and caulking guns).

4. Cleans brushes, rollers, spray equipment and other tools using the appropriate solvent.

5. Erects and climbs ladders and scaffolding and attaches ladder jacks and planks observing proper techniques and safety precautions.

6. Estimates the amount of material required to do the job. Computes square footage of area to be painted in order to determine supplies needed.

7. May mix colors and stains to match existing colors using proper tinting colors.

8. May perform work in other trade areas, such as plastering, roofing, carpentry, masonry, to a limited extent under the direction of a technical supervisor.

9. Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the tools of the trade.
Knowledge of the methods of surface preparation used prior to application of stain, protective and/or decorative coatings.
Knowledge of various patching and filling materials, their use and use of tools for application.
Knowledge of the proper techniques and safety precautions for erecting and climbing ladders and scaffolding and the attachment of ladder jacks and planks.
Knowledge of the spreading rate of various types of coatings in conjunction with the surface to which it is applied.
Knowledge of mathematics used to compute square footage of area to be painted in order to determine supplies needed.
Knowledge of solvents of the painting trade and their usage.
Knowledge of the various efficient and safe methods used to remove existing finish.
Understanding of relevant safety procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, and two (2) years of relevant experience; or other equivalent combination of education and experience.
