SVCC is located in a rural setting of rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland. There is easy access to nearby metropolitan Richmond, Virginia, the states capital, as well as Raleigh, North Carolina, and Lynchburg, Virginia. The area is famous for its two lakes, Gaston and Kerr, and a multitude of state and national parks which offer recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, skiing, jet-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnics, and relaxation. The area also offers sports arenas for baseball, softball, soccer and beautiful golf courses. There are cultural activities including various theaters and arts councils offering concerts, plays, and live entertainment, and there are many local festivals held throughout the year.

Southside Virginia Community College, a comprehensive community college, is seeking a full-time 9-month faculty member for Cosmetology in our Chase City service area, with an anticipated start date of August 21, 2023 or before. The successful candidate must be committed to our mission to provide quality education to a diverse constituency. The instructor will provide instruction for both the dual enrollment and adult cosmetology programs at the Estes Center. Classes taught may be a combination of day, night and/or weekends for an average of 12 credit hours per fall and spring semester, and 8 credit hours in the summer.

Instruction will include online, seated and lab activities to help students meet the qualifications needed. The faculty member is entrusted with imparting the knowledge and skills each student needs to be successful. The instructor will provide quality delivery of assigned courses while ensuring that all students achieve competency in the course objectives. The primary goal of the program is to prepare students to pass the VADPOR Cosmetology License Exam.

Instructors evaluate and resolve student questions, issues and problems and ensure appropriate action is taken in compliance with policy, procedures and legal requirements. Instructors are to be motivating, fair and impartial, creative, dedicated and professional.

Responsibilities:
  • Plan, prepare and deliver quality classroom instruction in lecture, clinical and/or laboratory format based on the approved course outline be selecting and utilizing a variety of approved course materials and teaching methods that address all learning modalities to ensure that the needs of individual students in the program are met and are in compliance with VADPOR and the preparation for the licensure exam.
  • Stay informed of licensure changes and modifications by the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology as it pertains to instruction and licensure.
  • Employ a hybrid teaching approach via Zoom, online and in-person classes.
  • Advise students in the Cosmetology program regarding course selection.
  • Recommend students for graduation by submitting the appropriate paperwork to the Dean of Career and Occupational Technology.
  • Assist with program assessment.
  • Assess student learning using appropriate methods (advising and periodic assessment) to meet any challenges and learning styles.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness and strong outcomes in Student Retention, Student Success and Student Attendance.
  • Conduct an engaging classroom lecture and/or lab based on the course outline.
  • Motivate students by demonstrating sensitivity for concerns and actively involving students in classroom discussions and/or activities.
  • Advise students on attendance, grades and issues in order to ensure successful completion of courses.
  • Contact absentee students by text, email and/or phone as needed to improve retention.
  • Manage classroom environment through compliance with campus policies, including but not limited to classroom management, attendance, punctuality and professionalism.
  • Monitor and prepare supplies and equipment to ensure readiness prior to class, informing appropriate campus personnel when areas requiring attention are discovered.
  • Ensure that all educational activity is conducted in a legal and ethical manner.
  • Maintain relationships with employers to assist students with job placement.
  • Work collaboratively with the Dean to create and maintain a list of advisory board members to provide input on the curriculum.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Virginia Cosmetology Instructor license by the start of employment and have 5 years of current and documented experience in the field.
  • Must possess the ability to work effectively with a culturally and educationally diverse student population.
  • Must possess sufficient technology skills to work productively in an organization that utilizes significant information and instructional technology resources.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to work well independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to present material experientially, addressing the different types of learning styles; demonstrated teaching skills.
  • Knowledge of computers and avenues for online learning.
  • An understanding of the community college environment and mission

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior high school and/or college teaching experience.
  • Associates degree or equivalent in teaching field.
  • Knowledge of classroom management.
