Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Sr. Lab Technician for the Department of Genetics.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Research uses the genetically tractable C. elegans systems to study processes relevant to human health and disease using genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and microscopy/imaging.
  • Work with a research supervisor but also be capable of working independently to perform lab work in this area. Standard laboratory techniques include C. elegans genetic analysis, transgenesis, biochemical experiments, CRISPR and recombinant DNA techniques, phenotypic analysis, dissecting, epifluorescence and confocal microscopy.
  • Maintaining an accurate and detailed lab notebook and presentations of data.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelors degree in a scientific discipline.
  • A combination of two years college-level science curriculum plus two years relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests may be substituted for the degree.
  • An additional equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience in the above combination.
  • Education in genetics or life sciences and experience in conducting related laboratory research.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of scientific empirical procedures.
  • Must understand the fundamentals of the science.
  • Must be able to read and understand technical documents.
  • Must perform basic scientific routines, protocols, and tests.
  • Must articulate data to researchers.
  • Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • Skilled with standard life science laboratory techniques such as genetic analysis, transgenesis, biochemical experiments, CRISPR and recombinant DNA techniques, phenotypic analysis, dissecting, epifluorescence and confocal microscopy and ability to perform these techniques with C. elegans.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with C. elegans genetics is an asset.
Equipment Utilized
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office and Adobe, PCR machines.
  • Familiar with PCR machines, dissecting microscopes, Zeiss light (inverted and upright), epifluorescence, and/or confocal microscopes.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Lift and move up to 30 pounds and operate and maintain sophisticated equipment.
  • Able to stand, lift, bend.
  • Able to reach and grasp with arms and hands.
  • Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
