Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION: The Dean of Arts and Sciences reports to the Vice President for Academic and Student Services and is responsible for the supervision of the Arts & Sciences instructional programs. The dean is responsible for providing leadership for Arts and Sciences academic programs, supervising and evaluating faculty and classified staff within those programs, and managing a division budget. Additionally, this key administrator position will provide for the primary liaison activities between unit division academic employees and administration. As a member of the College leadership team, and in cooperation with the team of deans, the Dean of Arts & Sciences also assists with the daily campus operations at Woodland Community College.

Under the direction of the College Vice President for Academic and Student Services, the Dean will connect the institutional strategy of driving student access and success with the operations of the Student Services and Instructional units.

Under the direction of the College Vice President for Academic and Student Services, the Dean will be committed to identifying gaps in student outcomes on the basis of factors such as race, ethnicity and gender, and then mobilize the College to improve results.

• Strategic Vision for the College and Its Students, Reflected in External Partnerships
Under the direction of the College Vice President for Academic and Student Services, the Dean will leverage the institution’s influence and resources to pave the way for ongoing student access and success by forging partnerships with outside entities, including K-12 school districts, four-year colleges, community-based organizations and employers.

• Raise and Allocate Resources in Ways Aligned to Student Success
Under the direction of the College Vice President for Academic and Student Services, the Dean will develop resources to achieve significantly improved student outcomes by implementing well-designed institutional changes at scale, and ensuring they are embedded for the long term.

• Maintain ongoing unit divisional plan, which provides for adequate academic employee, classified staff, equipment and facilities, including plans for repair, replacement, modification, and refurbishment of facilities and equipment;
• Develop and maintain annual budgets for assigned areas of responsibility;
• Develop, direct, coordinate, supervise and evaluate the programs, personnel, operations and activities of their respective units, including program planning, and analysis and review (Mathematics and Science, Social Science, Fine Arts and Language Arts and Humanities). Work with the Vice President to ensure compliance with Education Code, state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, District policies, and all contractual agreements between the Governing Board and recognized bargaining units.
• Provide guidance to and receive advice from faculty organizations on matters relating to the instructional programs; promote the inclusion of students in participatory governance process.
• Ensure that all unit courses, curriculum and programs comply with applicable laws, other federal, state, and local requirements, district rules and regulations, Education Code, and collective bargaining agreements; collaborate with the staff to assure that proper course articulation is maintained with other institutions of higher education.
• Develop, implement, direct and evaluate activities related to articulation with secondary schools and matriculation activities within the college, including the recruitment, admission, assessment, and advisement and retention of students.
• Develop, maintain, review, evaluate, promote, and report on all divisional instructional programs and curriculum, in consultation with staff at Woodland Community College and District staff as appropriate;
• Develop and coordinate the appropriate divisional class schedules, including full-time and adjunct faculty teaching assignments and final examination schedules;
• Assist in the development, revision and implementation of the College’s Educational Master Plan;
• Recruit, screen, recommend the hiring of full-time and part-time faculty and academic classified staff in accordance with College procedures, Board policies, and administrative regulations;
• Working with fellow deans coordinate and manage appropriate divisional meetings and division meetings; represent the College on District, community, and regional committees pertaining to instructional matters;
• Compile, maintain, and communicate procedures and requirements for the college curriculum; Assure that new instructional staff is appropriately oriented to the College and the District; Develop materials and implement activities to support instructional programs,
• Collaborate with fellow deans related to the activities of outreach, recruitment, retention, and marketing for the college;
• Assist with the campus institutional advancement efforts, including the writing and administration of grants;
• Provide first administrative contact for the resolution of divisional staff and student complaints and grievances;
• Perform other duties as assigned, which includes evening, weekend, and other collateral assignments.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

• District organization, operations and objectives;
• Available resources in educational research.

• Establish and maintain positive relationships with community and business leaders, regional K-12 school districts, and other higher education institutions;

• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate, by the final filing date, must possess the minimum qualifications for Educational Administrators at California Community Colleges:

• Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited institution; AND
• One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s administrative assignment.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

• Doctoral degree from an accredited institution
• 3-5 years of Administrative experience
• Knowledge of ACCJC Accreditation regulations
• Knowledge of California Education Code and Title V
• Knowledge of working with HSI (Hispanic Serving Institutions) colleges
• Work collegially and collaboratively with diverse constituencies, both internal and external;
• Effectively communicate orally and in writing;
• Be a strong and articulate proponent of higher education.
• Experience working in a participatory governance environment;
• Teaching, counseling or administrative experience in higher education, preferably in a community college setting.


Range 37, Management Salary Schedule

Salary Range

$95,775 - $111,168/YR.

Benefits Information

BENEFITS/SALARY: The District offers a comprehensive benefits package for employees and dependent(s), for positions whose FTE is .60 or higher, valued at over $24,000 annually with no out of pocket expense to employees + dependents for their monthly medical premiums. The package includes health, dental, vision, two (2) life insurance policies and an Employee Assistance program. Additional benefits include contributions to the State Teacher’s Retirement System (STRS), 457/403b options, 12 sick days, 22 vacation days, 223 day/12 month contract.
