Student Care and Advocacy Specialist (Temporary Part-Time)

Job Description

Position Summary: In support of the colleges mission and strategic plan, Student Care and Advocacy works to provide holistic support to students experiencing non-academic barriers to their academic success. This work is done both at a micro and macro level and is supported by positions like the Student Care and Advocacy Specialist, who will provide non-clinical information and referral services to students who seek assistance with meeting basic needs. The overall purpose of this job is to provide support to the Case Manager & Director in providing non-clinical information and referral services for students who need to be linked with basic resources such as transportation, food security, child care, academic resources, etc. More complex cases dealing with foster care, homelessness, etc. may be triaged by Specialist but would be referred to Case Manager for ongoing follow up. The person in this role will respond to referrals from a variety of sources. They will be the primary contact for the SCA email account. They will screen, assess and formulate and action plan for each student. Connect students to internal and external resources. They will participate in outreach activities promoting SCA; assist in building and maintaining community partnerships- being the key person to update resource listings. They will actively promote the Pellissippi Pantry and serve as a backup for the SCA Specialist assigned to the Pantry. They will participate in and promote other activities within the Dean of Students and Student Affairs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
65%- Student Support: Supports the work of the Case Manager and Director in providing non-clinical information and referral services to students who seek assistance with basic needs. Screen, assess and link students to internal and external resources in an effort to address non-academic barriers to retention and completion. (Primary focus transportation, food security, child care, academic resources, etc. Referring more complex cases dealing with foster care, homelessness, etc. to Case Manager & Director.)

Responds to referrals from a variety of sources including: student self-referral, staff, faculty, Navigate, etc. within the defined guidelines. (Will serve as the primary contact on SCA email.)
Conducts initial screenings and assessments to determine students needs and formulate an action plan.
Connects students with resources within the college based on their specific need(s). (i.e. Homeless Student Scholarship, Student Opportunity Fund, Non-Traditional Students Fund, Access & Diversity, Veterans Services, Trio, Counseling, Disability Services, Career Services, etc.)
Refers students to a variety of community agencies whose services are aligned with the students reported needs. (i.e. social service, transportation, child-care, financial, health care, housing, legal, etc.)
Maintains regular contact with the student to monitor their engagement with various resources.
Utilizes established documentation system to record referrals and follow up support (i.e. spreadsheets, EAB Navigate)
Collect, analyze and report data specific to the assigned campus(es) and assist with data collection, analysis and reporting for the department

25% Advocacy, Education and Outreach-

Represents the Department of Student Care and Advocacy in a number of activities such as admissions events, orientations, welcome week activities, classroom presentation, etc.
Assists in the development and maintenance of a network of community partners and resources that address students non-academic needs (i.e. food, housing, transportation, child care, financial fitness, etc.) - Primarily responsible for updating resource lists on a regular basis.

Pantry Care & Operations- Serves as a back up to our SCA Specialist assigned to the Pantry, in their absence or during periods of heightened needs

Manages communications for individuals seeking assistance from the Pantry.
Learns how to maintain pantry inventory, and assists in that role.
Establishes a relationship with our vendors and places orders (food and non-food pantry products) with them.
Learns our point of sale.
Will pack food pantry orders & stocks shelves; rotating food items as needed
Will work collaboratively with Hardin Valley Garden staff to ensure that fresh fruits and vegetables are included in pantry orders when available.
Will obtain and maintain the food handler certification through Knox County Department of Health or other approved Body.
Serves as back-up for delivery fulfillment and delivery during emergency situations.

5% Administrative

Supports and participates in activities within Dean of Students and Student Affairs, as appropriate
Completes other duties as assigned and necessary.

Assists in the creation & coordination of a variety of services, resources and programs to assist students at risk, as well as all students (i.e. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Coffee & Conversation, etc.)

Required Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree in Social Work, Sociology or Psychology; One year of higher education experience preferred. Minimum of 560 hours Field Experience in social work higher education setting preferred

(Part-time work experience is calculated at 50% credit of full-time work experience)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Work Characteristics:
Proficient in computer skills including Microsoft Suite
Excellent verbal, written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of best practices in working with diverse populations
