The Assistant Dean for Bar Success is a key member of the Law School’s senior leadership team and will report to the Associate Dean for Academic and Bar Success, and will work in collaboration with the Dean, Academic Dean, and faculty colleagues. The Assistant Dean will lead the implementation of innovative and inspirational strategies and programs to enhance preparation for the bar exam and will teach appropriate courses. To achieve the significant goals that New York Law School has established for the bar success of its students, the Assistant Dean for Bar Success will play a large leadership role and:

  • Work closely with the Associate Dean for Academic and Bar Success to ensure that a seamless continuum of robust academic and bar support is offered to, and maintained for, every student to achieve the best possible academic outcomes and bar outcomes.

  • Take a principal role in the faculty’s review and assessment of current bar exam outcomes, bar support programming and services, and the development of proposed curricular and co-curricular changes to achieve our bar success objectives.

  • Ensure that proper communications (messaging, marketing, and awareness), scheduling, and coordination of bar study and support services are offered year-round, by working collaboratively with faculty, administrators, alumni, and students.

  • Develop and facilitate orientations and workshops on bar-success topics for students before their final year of study. Develop and implement bar programming during the final year to on-ramp graduating students for the bar preparation period.

  • Counsel students individually about bar preparation awareness and planning for success strategies from day one of their law school careers, including the bar application process and requests for bar exam accommodations.

  • Work closely with the offices of Institutional Research, Academic Planning and Career Development, Academic Success, and with Bar Course faculty to modify existing indicators for bar success and failure, and to identify students in need of individualized intervention (academic support or specific bar skills development) before their final year of study.

  • In conjunction with the Office of Institutional Research:

    • identify applicable data sets to determine what analysis must be conducted; and

    • collect data regarding student engagement on campus and be prepared to present data at faculty meetings, Board meetings, and other meetings.

  • Teach appropriate bar-related courses, such as Introduction to MEE and Introduction to MBE.

  • Plan, coordinate, and teach academic support classes for students enrolled in the Introduction to MEE and the Introduction to MBE courses whose GPAs rank them in the bottom 40% of the class in their final year.‎

  • Coordinate Winter and Summer Bar support programs. Engage in high-level monitoring of recent graduates studying for the bar exam and provide a range of reinforcements as needed.

  • Manage alumni bar mentoring program to ensure continuity of messaging and effective support for recent graduates studying for the bar.

  • Support and counsel graduates re-taking the bar exam to develop effective strategies to ensure success.

  • Serve as the liaison to, and manage the School's relationships with, all commercial bar preparation companies.

  • Serve on faculty committees as assigned by the Academic Dean.

This is a senior administrative, year-round (12 months) position with the possibility of faculty status, depending on qualifications, experience, and performance.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • J.D. from an American Bar Association-accredited law school and license to practice law in the United States.

  • At least 2 years of bar support or academic support teaching experience.

  • Working knowledge of the Uniform Bar Exam.

  • Knowledge of educational theories.

  • A strong commitment to service and evidence of ability to collaborate with, and inspire and motivate, faculty, students and staff in a variety of settings.

  • Excellent project management skills, including, but not limited to, developing, planning, and implementing goals.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and independently.

  • Superior written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Compensation is highly competitive and commensurate with experience.
