POSITION BACKGROUND Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, tenure-track faculty member in Digital Media Arts and Design / Animation commencing with the 2020 fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves all areas of Digital Media Arts, Design and Animation. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities, assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.
The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Orange Coast College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting individualized student and employee goals through the work of Digital Media Arts and Design / Animation.
One of seven departments in Visual and Performing Arts, OCC Digital Media Arts and Design (DMAD) offers degrees in traditional graphic design, UX design and animation. We regularly transfer students to four-year programs and certify students in one of our three DMAD Certificate Programs: Graphic Design, UX Design, and Animation. We have a decades-long legacy of producing high-caliber employees for the local design community.
The primary teaching assignment includes classes in 2D and 3D animation, as well as, motion graphics and Adobe Creative Cloud basics. Additional responsibilities include curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.

Qualifications and Physical Demands
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Provide instruction in Digital Media Arts and Design / Animation in accordance with established course outlines.
Provide leadership in the development and revision of Digital Media Arts and Design / Animation curriculum responsive to the students served.
Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.
The assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and online sections.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (4):
Valid California Community College instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR
Any Bachelor's degree or higher and two years of professional experience; OR
Any Associate degree and six years of professional experience; OR
Any Master's degree and professional experience, the professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment;
Or, possess a combination of education and experience that is at least equivalent to the above. A minimum of 2 years of recent experience teaching Animation at the post-secondary level with evidence of student success in teaching.
Professional experience in an animation studio setting - including multiple aspects of the production of 2D and 3D animation.
A sample of professional and personal work will be required for those receiving an interview for this position.

Evidence of participation in student success initiatives in a post-secondary setting. Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a diverse and frequently underprepared student population.
Evidence of an ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
Evidence of an ability to adapt teaching pedagogy to the knowledge level (developmental through transfer) and personality of each individual and class. Evidence of an ability to do administrative/organizational work such as budget development, faculty/staff work-study training, student supervision, and faculty peer evaluation.
Experience creating, evaluating, preparing, and revising curriculum, courses, course materials, AA degrees, and vocational certificates.
Experience in overall program development and supervision including program review and preparation of reports and grant applications.
Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.
Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in the teaching of animation.
Assist in the development, support, and teaching of a curricular program in animation.
Ability to work well in collaborative work environments.
The applicant should possess a strong technical grounding in design fundamentals, design process, and creative problem-solving.
Demonstrated ability to create, direct, and collaborate on projects that include 3-D animation, 2-D animation, and interactive media design.
Demonstrate knowledge in classical animation, 2D animation, 3D animation, motion graphics, animation history, storyboarding, concept art, compositing, and/or digital visual effects.
Recognized knowledge of the key concepts in the field Animation, from story-board to post.

Network of contacts with other professionals, agencies and employers.
Knowledge of history and theory of animation, digital media and visual culture.
Ideal candidates will have experience/expertise with multiple software packages, including Adobe Creative Suites: After Effects, Autodesk Maya, Photoshop, Illustrator.
Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and the field of Digital Media Arts and Design / Animation shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
Willingness to examine and re-mediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
Experience and skill in addressing issues of equity in the classroom.
Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Digital Media Arts and Design / Animation, particularly as it relates to the relevance of Digital Media Arts and Design / Animation to students' lives, interests, and communities.
Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within Digital Media Arts and Design / Animation courses and classrooms.
Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.
Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in the department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.
Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.

Conditions of Employment
For a full-time, two-semester, tenure track position a maximum starting range of $54,626 to $93,132 is offered, based on the 2020-2021 salary schedule of $54,626 to $130,233. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,186 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.
