ABOUT THE COLLEGE:

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. PURPOSE OF POSITION:

This Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2 position coordinates and provides instructional and laboratory support to undergraduate courses in one or more of the following instructional areas: Anatomy & Physiology, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Oceanography, and Physics. This position reports to the Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 4.
This is an eleven-month, forty-hour per week, cyclic position, with four unpaid weeks off from August 16 - September 15. The hours of work will be primarily 8 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
Schedule may vary to meet laboratory and campus needs.

 

Position Responsibilities

 

  • Prepares equipment, materials, and solutions for classwork projects; prepares demonstrations as requested by instructors; assists instructor with lecture and laboratory material; conducts laboratory or lecture demonstrations; confers with instructor in establishing and developing assignments
  • Plans laboratory assignments and schedules
  • Assists and advises students in laboratory assignments or in discipline subject matter; writes, edits or modifies laboratory handouts or manuals; modifies experiments; advises instructors of potential problems with existing programs
  • Operates and performs routine maintenance and repairs on laboratory and demonstration instruments and equipment; instructs students, teaching assistants and faculty in the use of equipment
  • Monitors laboratories to ensure compliance with safety policy; assists in the development of safe laboratory procedures
  • Estimates quantity and quality of supplies and materials needed; orders equipment and supplies for the course; follows through with purchasing department or procurement of supplies; maintains adequate stock levels
  • Organizes, promotes, coordinates, and conducts specific programs with adults or youth including letter writing, telephoning, public speaking, training, counseling, and public relations work; teaches technical subject matter in areas such as home economics, agriculture, and community development
  • Conducts literature searches and assists in determining most suitable methods to be used in research
  • Prepares progress reports concerning research activities; assembles, organizes, and interprets data; performs photography in conjunction with experiments; prepares data for computer input; interprets computer output; assists in writing reports
  • Collaborate with the Environmental Safety Manager in developing safe laboratory procedures and practices
  • Performs other work as required
  • May teach laboratory portion of selected classes

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate of Art's degree with major in scientific field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics); or a minimum of one year of experience as a Scientific Instructional Technician, or equivalent education and experience
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience with fostering a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate, coordinate, and cooperate within a diverse team setting
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Ability to support multiple science lab areas (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Experience working in higher education

 

Supplemental Information

 

Working Conditions:

  • Standing and moving about the prep room and labs
  • Handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals using personal protective equipment and applicable safety procedures.
  • Frequent repetitive arm, hand, and finger motions
  • Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screen in performing work assignments
  • Work in a setting with frequent interruptions
  • May need to carry, lift or move equipment/supplies up to 50 lbs.
  • Regular Work schedule: 8:00am to 4:00 pm Monday-Friday with four unpaid weeks off from August 16- September 15. Schedule may vary to meet laboratory and campus needs.
