Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland Office of Special Events seeks an energetic, self-starter to serve as a Student Intern on the events team for September 2023 through September 2024. The Office of Special Events is responsible for planning highly visible, strategic events and targeted programming for the University of Maryland, such as Commencement, Board of Trustees Foundation meetings, building groundbreakings and dedications, presidents suite for football and basketball games, campaign events, school/college development events and many more! The events team is responsible for creating invaluable relationships with university leadership, vendors, colleagues, high-leveldonors, alumni and students.

Job Description
  • Provide event support to the Special Events team. Duties to include; assist Administrative Coordinator with answering main phone line and events emails, assisting with the event registration process, researching event ideas, décor and venues, and various projects related to special events.
  • Provide excellent customer service to our event attendees both in person and over the phone, answering general event-related inquiries and assist the event leads in taking RSVPs, if needed.
  • Assist with event preparation tasks including: Gathering registration materials, creating event collateral and signage, décor creation, packing for events and additional items as needed.
  • Provide on-site assistance at events, working evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Administrative support such as mailings, department emails, and coordinating internal meetings.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualifications
  • Full-time undergraduate student.
  • Must commit work one full year.
  • Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Limited Winter/Summer term hours available as needed.
  • Friendly and courteous with a proven track record of excellent customer service skills.
  • Self-described “people person” who enjoys interpersonal interaction.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Capable of working independently, but willing to take directions and ask questions to meet the teams goals.
  • All students are encouraged to apply, but preference will be given to sophomores or juniors who are considering careers in event-planning.
