Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Academic Advisor works directly with the Program Manager for Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland, to coordinate and support the academic activities related to academic advising, recruitment, orientation, retention, scheduling, graduation, course and student record retention. This position advises a caseload of approximately 500 undergraduate students.

The Academic Advisor, as a member of a small but mighty team, and will assists the office with special events such as Design Day, commencement, and awards banquets and completes other tasks to keep the office and programs running smoothly. The position also supports student organizations within Mechanical Engineering.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelors degree. A Masters degree in Higher Education or Student Affairs may substitute for experience.

Experience:
  • A minimum of two years of full-time related higher education experience.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • High degree of attention to detail.
  • Collaborative and able to interact effectively with both external and internal audiences and capable of building strong work relationships in a complex environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment, prioritize tasks, think proactively, and work independently, using good judgment and experience to make decisions.
  • Ability to contribute as a problem solver, handle complex tasks while maintaining deadlines, be well organized
  • Proficiency with various office software packages (Excel, Word, Power Point, and Google Docs).

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Masters degree preferred.
  • Academic credentials in sciences or higher education and experience with college students in the sciences
  • Special consideration will be given to candidates with a Bachelors or Masters degree in a STEM field, psychology, educational counseling, or higher education administration.
  • Knowledge of academic advising policies and information management systems such as U-Achieve, SIS, Advise on the Web, SIS, and/or ELMS/Canvas or similar systems

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to sit for extended time and operate standard office equipment and keyboards.
