Position Summary

The Opportunity: The Cardinal Achievement Program (CAP) supports students who identify as first generation or low-income. The program focuses on eliminating barriers to college and provides ongoing support throughout their time at Skagit Valley College (SVC).
Through individualized coaching, educational guidance and personalized advising, CAP supports students in enrolling and navigating their first year of college while completing their educational pathways towards and graduation.

The CAP Coach will provide assistance and support to current and prospective SVC students, including participating in recruitment and strategic enrollment activities. The Coach participates in the development of college-wide outreach, retention, and completion strategies that enhance student access, entry, persistence, and degree completion for a diverse student population.

This high impact program will provide holistic, culturally responsive advising and coaching, including referrals for career development, job and internship resource and academic planning, academic support, and financial resources to enhance students entry and persistence toward the completion of educational goals. Serving over 100 students annually, the CAP Program implements and evaluates high impact practices to a diverse student population.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Use a coaching model to improve yield rates, decrease “summer melt” and support low income and/or first-generation college students in navigating the application to enrollment cycle preparing them for SVC;
  • Provide and support ensure seamless coordination of campus tours, events and activities, programs, and outreach calls as needed;
  • Carefully maintain data records to demonstrate program effectiveness and complete requested reports that include statistics on programs, services, and high impact practices;
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with students and employees through online technology and personal contacts. Create and manage content for outreach, entry, progression, and completion;
  • Provide support to new and returning students to complete their programs of study;
  • Support specialized student success, orientation, and degree/certificate completion workshops and presentations in collaboration with key student services and instructional departments;
  • Provide guidance and resources for students and families. Develop, facilitate, and evaluate presentations and participate in outreach and recruitment activities, affinity group celebrations, including students of color, students with disabilities, and first-generation college students;
  • Participate in Counseling & Navigation team meetings to stay up to date on advising policies, practices, and updates that impact students planning and program progression.
  • Maintain active coordination with Enrollment Services and Financial Aid timelines and policies;
  • Collaborate with student services and instruction departments to facilitate workshops for new and returning learners on various topics such as college navigation, diversity, equity and inclusion, clubs and organizations, leadership activities;
  • Promote student participation in cultural enrichment activities provided by Office for Equity and Inclusion, Athletics, Campus View Village, and Student Life and Development;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President for Equity and Inclusion.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Have a passion for developing relationships with students and the broader community to effectively coach and support students to achieve their academic and career goals;
  • Work well individually and in a team setting to implement developmentally responsive, and culturally competent outreach, entry and first-year communication to foster a smooth onboarding experience into the college;
  • Develop effective collaboration and coordination with key campus stakeholders to successfully implement programs and services;
  • Demonstrate equity, diversity, and inclusion in all services and practices.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in education, student affairs, counseling, communications, or other closely related field from an accredited institution;
  • At least two (2) years of experience in education or other fields.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Candidates must exhibit three (3) years of experience working in a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, gender/sexuality, and ethnic backgrounds and identities;
  • Demonstrated experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting program participants;
  • Three (3) years of experience advising or instruction in higher education or high school environment;
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

 

Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure

Salary and Benefits:

  • Annual salary rate for this twelve-month, 100% of full-time position is $54,000;
  • Contracts are written annually for the period of July 1 to June 30. This position will be filled as soon practical after a candidate is identified and the salary will be pro-rated for the remaining contract period.
  • This position is exempt from civil service. This position is eligible for overtime.

Conditions of Employment:
