For sports fans, the UTEP Miners offer exciting Division I college athletics at Sun Bowl Stadium, the Don Haskins Center, and Kidd Field, University Field, and the Helen of Troy Softball Complex. Southwest University Park, located a mile away in lively downtown El Paso, is home to the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, and the El Paso Locomotive, a professional soccer team founded in 2019.

The department of physics is in a period of significant growth since 2020: three tenure-track faculty members have joined the department and new research funding secured by physics faculty in the last three years amounts to $7.3 M, supporting research efforts in diverse and interdisciplinary fields. The department has strong research activities in computational quantum science, quantum computing, physics at extreme conditions, statistical mechanics, experimental atmospheric science, experimental condensed matter physics involving magnetism, materials development, spectroscopic methods, biomaterials, biophysics, and astrophysics. The department has access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities for optical, magnetic, spectroscopic, and structural characterizations of materials, as well as outstanding computational capabilities. Our faculty also contributes to interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Materials Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Computational Science, Data Science, and Biomedical Engineering departments in UTEP. The department of physics has a full-professor cohort that is 50 percent female, and a total faculty cohort that is 27% female.


Job Description:

The Department of Physics, The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in broad area of clean energy. Interest is in candidates with expertise in renewable energies/energy storage, nuclear energy, and rare-earth materials that complements current areas of expertise in the department.

Ideal candidates should display the potential for excellence in teaching and research and ability to engage undergraduates in their research programs, demonstrate the ability to leverage the resources provided by the university into a successful long-term research agenda, show the potential for leadership within their department, college, and university, and demonstrate commitment to support interdisciplinary research. The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain an independent, externally funded on-campus research program involving students. Selected candidates' research is expected to complement the existing areas within the physics department, and they are strongly encouraged to work closely with other researchers in the department. 


Requirements:

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related discipline, possess postdoctoral experience, and have a strong record of research accomplishments, have teaching experience, and possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
