Description

The Director, Biopharmaceutical Technology, functions as the academic administrator for the Biopharmaceutical Technology program by providing accessible, quality learning experiences; facilitates the learning process to help students be successful; and collaborates with workforce partners to ensure that the program is meeting the needs of business and industry. As the Build Back Better (BBB) Project Liaison, the employee serves as the liaison between the BBB grant and the College. The Liaison works closely with the BBB Project Director; the Colleges Director, Grants; Dean, Career and Technical Education; and Vice President, Instruction to ensure coordinated execution of all BBB project activities implemented at College and system level.

Essential Functions:
Essential responsibilities and other duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Director, Biopharmaceutical Technology (50% of full-time employment)

  • Plans and delivers accessible, quality instruction that enhances student learning and ensures students understanding of course outcomes.
  • Teaches a load of 12 to 15 contact hours per week in curriculum, non-curriculum, and/or business and industry training.
  • Prepares objectives, assignments, assessments, instructional and supplemental materials, grading standards, and attendance policies in accordance to college and department policies; develops course syllabi to be distributed; keeps online courses regularly updated; and begins and ends classes as scheduled.
  • Ensures the classroom environment (seated, online, or hybrid) is appropriate for diverse student learners through equity and inclusion frameworks.
  • Ensures availability for all students, in the classroom and through distance learning, by maintaining established office hours, offering availability by appointment, and by responding to electronic communication in an appropriate, timely manner.
  • Maintains and completes accurate records of student attendance and grades as indicated by institutional policy and submits all final reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Develops new courses and/or revises course content and outcomes in the area as needed; recommends appropriate course textbooks, supplies, software, and equipment; Creates the programs course sequence, develops the programs course schedule with input from faculty, and assigns teaching workloads for faculty.
  • Participates in institutional effectiveness processes, including managing program review, assessing course outcomes, developing the divisions plans of action, and assisting with grants, as needed.
  • Manages the assigned departmental budget; assists in planning future resources for equipment, materials, and supplies; recommends staffing needs.
  • Establishes and maintains productive working relationships with faculty, staff, advisory committees, and business and industry.
  • Collaborates with colleagues to ensure quality instruction and successful implementation of department and division goals, the colleges Strategic Plan, and state-wide initiatives.
  • Attends workshops, seminars, and conferences; makes presentations to outside agencies as a representative of the college; researches and implements best practices in teaching in the assigned area of study; participates in professional development activities, including required employee training offered by the college.
  • Supports the colleges mission, vision, and core values by adhering to all policies, procedures, and faculty guidelines.

BBB Project Liaison (50% of full-time employment)
  • Coordinates execution of grant activities by participating in work groups associated with: increasing enrollment through targeted outreach; BioTeach implementation; short-term course development; and virtual course development.
  • Implements processes to achieve grant outcomes and ensures accurate and timely reporting and data tracking.
  • Collaborates with the Instructor Apprentice, Biopharmaceutical Technologies to create immersion opportunities within industries.
  • Collaborates with BBB Outreach Navigator to facilitate and support community outreach activities appropriate to the project.
  • Collaborates with the NC Biotechnology Center to implement non-BBB project initiatives such as apprenticeships and work-based learning opportunities.
  • Maintains project documentation including, but not limited to, communications, policies, procedures, reports, plans of operation, budgets, expenditures, and records of project inventory.
  • Tracks BBB project through institutional effectiveness processes and progress indicators.
  • Reviews project success metrics and shares with stakeholders to ensure the project meets projected outcomes.
  • Leads and participates in regular project team meetings to discuss project progress and implement program modifications, as necessary.

Marginal Functions:
  • Serves on standing and ad hoc committees and focus groups; researches and develops recommendations related to academic and instructional programs; maintains contacts with business, industry, and professional organizations to keep instructional programs current.
  • Participates in the development and delivery of public information efforts; supports college functions and cultural activities.
  • Assists with inventory of programmatic equipment; assumes responsibility for labs and other facilities designated primarily for the assigned program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions:
The program director should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office, classroom and lab workspaces, and working closely with others.

The program director must maintain the office and teaching environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment.

Physical Conditions:
Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following; standing, walking or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and extended exposure to computer screens.

The program director is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously.

Additionally, the program director must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel.

Scheduling Conditions:
This is a full-time, 12-month position. This position requires a minimum of 36 hours weekly in direct service to the institution. The instructor must be on campus or at an approved alternate location for 27 hours per week, Monday through Friday, and allows flexible scheduling for the remaining nine hours.

Traveling Conditions:
Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites may be needed. Out of state travel is limited, but may be required for training and conferences

 

Experience and Training

Experience:
At least three years of relevant experience in the biopharmaceutical sciences industry is required.

Experience using a learning management system to teach hybrid and distance education courses, deliver customized training courses to business and industry, and/or at a community college is preferred.

Training:
An Associate degree in Biopharmaceutical Technology from a regionally accredited college or university, or a related field from a regionally accredited college is required.

A Bachelor's degree in Pharmaceutical Science or a Master degree in either Biology or Chemistry from a regionally accredited college or university is preferred.
