Instructor-Human Services
This is a full-time, term contract, academic-year faculty appointment within the Department of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services in the Human Services (Substance Abuse Counseling) program. The faculty member is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom and related activities. The faculty member is responsible for performing assigned teaching duties during the day, evening, and occasionally on the weekend on any Southwest Tennessee Community College campus as assigned.
Faculty are expected to adhere to all college policies and procedures. The faculty member is responsible for conforming to the standards of our certifying body in regards to course content, professional certification, and updated training. In addition, the faculty member is expected to teach in multiple modalities, such as traditional, hybrid, and online.
The Division of Humanities (DoH) consists of five academic departments: Communications, Graphic, and Fine Arts; Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services; Languages and Literature; Mathematics; and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The division accounts for 52% of full-time faculty, and over 100 adjunct faculty. While DoH's core function is general education, the division is home to 35 academic transfer programs, three Associate of Applied Science and two certificate programs, preparing students for entry into the workforce.
In support of the local and regional focus on eradicating the top societal ills of Memphis, the DoH leverages existing academic programs in the "helping professions" and integrates the research and scholarly best practices to help support the City of Memphis' Memphis 3.0 Strategic Plan. The division's contribution to workforce development is social, emotional, psychological, and foundational skills development. While the attainment of a credential is the ultimate goal of higher education, we also aspire to have civically engaged, culturally aware, and emotionally healthy citizens.
This role will be responsible for the following:
Essential Job Functions:
Prepares and delivers lectures on all of the offerings in the Human Services program or courses as assigned. Teaching includes preparation, delivery, and assessment for a full-time teaching load, which is currently 15 hours. Some teaching responsibilities may occur during required office hours when faculty are expected to advise students in their majors and courses.
Maintains office hours for students seeking advice (Academic advising of students) on class work, assignments, papers, and others.
Compiles, administers, evaluates and grades students' class work, assignments, tests, and papers; and keeps students informed about their progress by observation and informs them of corrective measures necessary for skill improvement.
Advises and counsels students in academic and career fields through mentoring and tutoring.
Maintains accurate student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
Provides service/outreach in the college and community by serving on college, division, and departmental committees, by participating in student activities, and by participating in scholarly activities in the community.
Establishing and maintaining a high quality program curriculum, in concert with the chair, that supports the goals and objectives of the College, Division, Department/Program.
Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
Participates in departmental and college committees; and provides outreach service to the community.
Attends all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean or Department Chair.
May perform other duties as assign by Department Head/Dean.

Position Requirements:
Master's degree with a human services, behavioral health or a related social science.
Ability to teach Human Services classes using various instructional delivery methods at any of the six (6) locations at varying times and days.
Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation.
Knowledge and understanding of a college academic environment.
Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies to facilitate student-centered learning; experience interacting successfully with academically and culturally diverse student populations.
Proficient in technology related to the functions of teaching, the department, and the college. Such technology includes computer skills, current learning management system, Microsoft Office 365 and associated apps like Outlook email, Teams, SharePoint, etc.

Ability to work with academically and culturally diverse student population.
Skill in active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

Minimum one (1) year teaching experience in higher education.
The Salary Range for the position is: Commensurate with the College's pay scale
