Job Summary:


The University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus employs 4,000 individuals, instructs over 16,000 students, and has a budget of $4 million. The Finance Office is responsible for all University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus accounting and financial functions which include but are not limited to:

  • Compliance with implementation and monitoring of accounting standards for a complex organization.
  • Preparation of financial statements for two campuses along with variance analysis and projections.
  • Distribution of financial information to various units along with resolving accounting and revenue variances.
  • Maintenance of financial systems.
  • Capital construction accounting.
  • Oversight and approval of service center costing.
  • Reconciliations between the general ledger and related subsystems.
  • Reconciliation and coordination of accounting interface with the States accounting system.
  • Accounting and policy support to various campus departments.
  • Internal reviews and compliance.
  • Interpretation/compliance of accounting standards, state, federal, and university fiscal rules.

This Accountant position performs accounting and financial functions in the Finance Office. The primary responsibilities include coordinating chartfield setup requests, preparing sales tax filing, reviewing department journal entries, compiling and creating entries for inter-unit cost allocation (IUCA) requests, reconciling and processing I/O payment requests from UC Health, identifying and correcting abnormal balances in financial statements, preparing financial reports, providing customer service to departments, and assisting with month-end and year-end closing tasks. Depending on specific qualifications, the selected candidate may be hired at either the entry, intermediate or senior professional level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate chartfield requests from departments, assign requests to accountants in Finance Office for processing, and monitor progress of chartfield setup and maintenance.
  • Review chartfield requests from departments and set up chartfield in finance system.
  • Review journal entries based on GAAP and university guidelines.
  • Compile sales tax information from departments and prepare filing of monthly sales tax return.
  • Create, maintain, and reconcile IUCAs workbook and journal entries in general ledger.
  • Reconcile and process I/O payment requests from UCH.
  • Monitor campus payroll suspense account and follow up with departments to clear outstanding balances.
  • Investigate and make corrections for abnormal balances in financial statements.
  • Research and resolve discrepancies and errors.
  • Interpret, analyze, evaluate, and investigate financial data or transactions.
  • Assist departments with issues of journal entries, sales tax reporting, and chartfields.
  • Generate and prepare financial reports as assigned.
  • Perform accounting tasks for university general ledgers month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closes.
  • Field questions from departments and provide training regarding accounting, financial reporting, and university systems (such as Peoplesoft and HCM).

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Professional Level:

  • A bachelors degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution with 24 semester hours in accounting or auditing is required. Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelors degree on a year for year basis.

Intermediate Professional Level:

  • A bachelors degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution with 24 semester hours in accounting or auditing is required. Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelors degree on a year for year basis.
  • One (1) year of professional accounting experience.

Senior Professional Level:

  • A bachelors degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution with 24 semester hours in accounting or auditing is required. Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelors degree on a year for year basis.
  • Two (2) years of professional accounting experience.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience at a Higher Education Institution or State of Colorado Agency with knowledge of university administrative and fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Experience with University of Colorado systems, reporting, finance, and PeopleSoft System financial module.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.

  • Detailed working knowledge of the University of Colorados Accounting System
  • Able to use standard query tools in a data warehouse environment to support reconciliation activities as well as to provide ad-hoc reports required by management.

Anticipated Pay Range:


The starting hiring range for this position has been established as:

Entry: $50,000 – $60,000

Intermediate: $55,000 – $65,000

Senior: $60,000 – $70,000

The above hiring range represents the Universitys good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

External candidates may be eligible for a one-time, non-base building sign-on bonus up to $2,000. Details of this recruitment incentive program will be provided during the interview process.

This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
