Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer, develop and implement strategic objectives, short and long term goals for facilities operational effectiveness and sustainability. This includes facilities operations and management, staff supervison, financial and facilities planning, project management, security and safety, and utilities and energy management.

Responsibilities*

Facilities Operations and Management:

  • Provide leadership in the stewardship of the Law School's resources and management as related to facilities operation, sustainability, and energy conservation
  • Plan and manage capital improvement initiatives and projects for the Law School which range from modest renovations to the design and construction of major renovation
  • Plan and oversee custodial services for Hutchins, Jefferies, Legal Research, and the Underground Library including classrooms, offices and special events, and other services
  • Plan and manage maintenance priorities for (4) buildings including: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structural systems 
  • Consult with maintenance team to schedule and perform difficult tasks and projects
  • Manage, supervise, train and develop law school facility staff overseeing custodial, maintenance, renovations, moves and projects
  • Maintain collaborative partnerships with EHS, DPSS, FMO, Plant Operations and Grounds to ensure Law School buildings are safe, clean, and well maintained

Financial and Facilities Planning:

  • Develop budget for building maintenance and renovation projects, equipment, supplies, furnishings, and appliances
  • Assess capital needs and oversee vendor maintenance and contract negotiation
  • Lead space management and floor plan upkeep and make recommendations to the COO

Project Management:

  • Initiate and manage small and large renovation and construction projects
  • Organize projects based on building use schedules and classes
  • Oversee primary faculty and staff moves are coordinated with excellence

Security and Safety:

  • Serve as primary emergency responder for Law School buildings
  • Oversee, monitor, and ensure all buildings comply with university, local, and national regulatory agencies' standards and policies: such as (ADA), OSHA), (OSEH), (BFS), (AEC), and Facilities Maintenance System
  • Manage Building Incident Response Team (BIRT), arrange fire drills, and AED upkeep
  • Monitor regular inspection of buildings, equipment, and furnishings to determine necessary improvements, repairs and/or replacements
  • Manage card reader and building access, door scheduling and programming

Utilities and Energy Management:

  • Oversee and monitor building air changes and filtration; handlers and equipment with BAS and Energy Management
  • Review and assess energy use and initiate projects for improvement

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor degree in engineering or significant (more than 10 years) experience demonstrating a deep understanding of building systems
  • Demonstrated successful supervision of staff with the ability to lead and develop an effective team
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in coordination of daily operations and managing a complex facility and renovation projects
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills to deal with a diverse range of community members
  • Demonstrated delivery of exemplary customer service skills
  • Project management and effective organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and excellent attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, excellent organizational skills; and, an excellent attendance record
  • Working knowledge of OSEH and OSHA standards and regulations

Desired Qualifications*

  • Major capital and project management experience
  • Knowledge and experience managing university facilities
  • Working knowledge of State of Michigan Bureau of Fire Safety (BFS), Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) and with Facilities Maintenance System (FMS)
