The Physics Department provides: (1) High quality Physics instruction to the University community through courses in introductory physics; (2) educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in physics through high quality curricula, faculty, and research facilities; (3) outreach programs that advance scientific knowledge. Our research programs cover a diverse spectrum including astrophysics, general relativity, condensed matter theory and experiment, computational physics, biophysics, nanoscale science, physics education, experimental nuclear physics, particle and nuclear theory, experimental optics, and experimental atomic and molecular physics. The department enrolls approximately 120 graduate students and 140 undergrad physics majors. The department size is approximately 56 faculty members. Other Work/Responsibilities

Selected individual will be responsible for performing all research tasks associated with the creation and maintenance of new genetically manipulated fission yeast strains, in support of research into the mechanics of the mitotic spindle being conducted in the Elting Lab. Specific tasks will include molecular biology and cloning of plasmids for protein expression, molecular cloning, genomic DNA preparation, PCR amplification, genetic verification of fission yeast strains (via sequencing), and microscopic imaging of fission yeast. Additional tasks in the laboratory may include cleaning and sterilization of equipment, making solutions, media, and plates, autoclaving media, maintaining inventory, ordering supplies, record keeping, disposal of lab materials with biological contamination. Significant experimental experience in yeast genetics or a related topic is essential. The individual will work closely with other members of the Elting Lab to design and verify reagents.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelors or masters degree in a life sciences field, such as cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, or a related field, plus at least 1 year of experience in a research setting related to the assigned duties

Department Required Skills

Extensive experience with molecular biology and related techniques, such as bacterial cell culture, yeast cell culture, DNA purification, DNA sequencing, PCR, gel electrophoresis, plasmid design and verification. Experience making and sterilizing (via autoclave) chemical buffer solutions, media, and pouring plates. Knowledge of maintaining inventory and chemical safety. Experience with yeast cell culture.
