Hutchinson Community College, located in Hutchinson, Kansas, is seeking qualified candidates for consideration to become HutchCCs 8th President. Established in 1928, HutchCC currently serves more than 10,000 students each year in more than 90 areas of study.

 


Candidates are required to be innovative, committed to student success, forward thinking, and an advocate for community college education within the community and state and federal legislature.

 


The successful candidate will have demonstrated successful experience in senior administration and management, preferably at a community college, recognition and familiarity with a community college that serves a diverse population; and be an entrepreneur.

The Opportunity

 


The next President of Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) will have the opportunity to build on a foundation of more than ninety-five years of educational excellence. The college is recognized as a leader among its peer community colleges and enjoys a strong reputation with the state legislature and 
the Kansas Board of Regents.

Serving more than 10,000 students each year in Kansas and throughout the United States, HutchCC offers more than ninety different areas of study, and provides business and industry training and continuing education opportunities throughout the state. It is recognized as a comprehensive community college supporting student residents, athletics, fine arts, transfer and technical programs, on-line and hybrid programming and serves as an intellectual and culture center for the city of Hutchinson.

 


Professional & Personal Qualifications

 


The Board of Trustees seeks a new President who will make a long-term commitment to the college. He/she will have successful experience in community and civic engagement and will be an outstanding advocate for the college in the community, with legislators and within the Kansas system of public higher education.

 


The next President must be innovative, committed to student success and have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Ideally, in his/her career, the next President will also have demonstrated the following:

  • Successful experience in senior administration and management, preferably at a community college, working with a board of trustees, a college foundation and diverse citizens, employees, and students; an earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution and teaching or counseling experience are preferred but not required;
  • Recognition and familiarity of the nature of a comprehensive community college that has a diverse student body, traditional academic transfer and technical programs, fine arts, athletics, residential facilities, off-site campuses, on-line learning, concurrent enrollment, service learning, and childcare center;
  • An entrepreneurial, visionary spirit who demonstrates a knowledge and empathy for the role education plays in the greater community and an accessible, visible leadership style that is inclusive and collaborative with an “open- door” approach;
  • Demonstrated success in attracting financial support from foundations, corporations, private donors and governmental sources;
  • Communication skills with the ability to listen actively; ability to use and present data clearly to make program decisions and inform stakeholders; an engaged individual who has demonstrated the ability to engender trust and respect with the various constituents on campus, within the community, business and industry, and at the state level with the legislature and Board of Regents;
  • Experience in establishing relationships and partnerships with K-12 entities, business and industry, other community colleges, proprietary institutions, and four-year institutions;
  • Successful experience in fiscal leadership regarding operational and capital budgets and developing strategic plans;
  • A track record of building consensus while supporting the collaborative engagement of faculty, staff, administrators and students to foster diversity, creativity, and innovation;
  • An appreciation and understanding of the role of shared governance and collective bargaining within the academic setting; and
  • A sophisticated understanding and appreciation of the role of technology in higher education, both to support student learning on campus and at a distance, as well as for management and information.

Serve as a visionary, passionate and innovative leader for the college, building on its current reputation for quality and student centered learning;

 


Maintain the stature that Hutchinson Community College holds with the state legislature and Board of Regents as a leader among its peer community colleges; sustain the positive relationships and support, internally, with students, staff, faculty, the Foundation Board and the Board of Trustees and externally with local and state officials, business and corporate leaders, and superintendents and high school principals in the region;

 


Continue Hutchinson Community Colleges commitment to “Access, Learning, and Collaboration by providing opportunities for affordable access to college through innovative delivery models and programs for learning, growth and improved quality of life;

 


Capitalize and actualize through programming and partnerships on the potential growth of regional industries in health care, pharmaceuticals, process manufacturing, agriculture, natural gas, salt, and plastics.

 


Explore the opportunity for increased associate degrees, non-credit offerings, baccalaureate partnerships, on- line course and program offerings, and the potential K-12 partnerships with Excel in CTE providing for the payment of college tuition by the state for college courses;

 


Maintain the high quality of the campuss physical plant with its attractive new and renovated facilities that are relatively debt free while addressing the student residential shortage and dealing with a “land-locked” campus;

 


Investigate potential cost savings within the programs and units as well as shared services and resources; improve and enhance marketing strategies and technology;

 


Develop additional fiscal resources through public and private funding by working with the colleges Foundation, establishing partnerships throughout the colleges service area with business and industry, and maintain fiscal stability through sound and prudent financial management;

 


Continue to grow and strengthen the two off-campus sites in McPherson and Newton, expanding offerings and further integrating the faculty, staff and students with the main campus; explore other opportunities for off-site education and campus sites;

 


Work collegially with the colleges faculty association recognizing the contributions and efforts of the faculty resulting in a positive campus climate and enhanced governance and decision-making process;

Understand and support the needs of a diverse student body; support faculty and staff diversity and be committed to equal opportunity; and

 


Support of and commitment to college athletics recognizing the reputation and responsibility that Hutchinson Community College has in hosting or helping facilitate the hosting of the annual NJCAA national mens basketball tournament, national womens volleyball tournament and national mens and womens track and field championships.
