Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC), a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for a Custodian 1 in the college's Custodial Services Department. Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of custodial and general maintenance duties in and around campus facilities. This position reports to the Custodial Services Supervisor and works Monday through Thursday from 1:00pm to 10:00pm and Friday from 1:00pm to 7:30pm. Hours of work are based on the needs of the department and college and may be adjusted. This is an overtime eligible position.

This position is eligible for a shift premium equal to $435 per month if the majority of hours worked fall between 5:00pm and 7:00am. Positions in the Custodial Services Department are represented by the Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA).

Essential Job Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedures.
  • Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors and carpets; empty/clean wastebaskets, recycle s, and trash s; empty and clean ash trays and cigarette urns; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
  • Assist with the set-up of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
  • Strip, clean, buff, and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools; buffers, auto-scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
  • Wash walls and equipment; use ladders when required in work assignments.
  • Lock and unlock assigned buildings; secure buildings when facilities are not in use, checking for unlocked doors and windows; report any unauthorized occupants and turn off lights.
  • Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.
  • Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools on an incidental basis.
  • Wash accessible interior and exterior windows. Clean blinds and curtains. Launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and products.
  • Safely operates all vehicles and other job-related equipment.

OTHER WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Attends college or department meetings as needed. Attends required training on topics such as cleaning methods and techniques, first aid, CPR, working relationships, etc.
  • Ensure no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. this includes but is not limited to security and safety, understanding of SDS, equipment, fire, disaster, hazardous waste, safe lifting, and body mechanics.
  • Ensure compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
  • Conduct self in a professional manner and ensure the interaction with team members, other support groups, and the public is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive to the college's values.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be required by the supervisor.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION REQUIRE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE IN:

  • Methods of maintaining, cleaning, and preserving a variety of surfaces.
  • Proper use of a wide range of chemicals according to state and federal regulations.
  • Handling and disposing of hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens with care.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION REQUIRE THE ABILITY TO:

  • Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS), room diagrams, and instructions.
  • Demonstrate positive customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to adjust workload in a variable paced work environment with setups and cleaning.
  • Ability to successfully handle multiple tasks and deal with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work independently and reliably. Regular and consistent attendance is expected.

REQUIRED WORK SCHEDULE AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position works Monday through Thursday from 1:00pm to 10:00pm and Friday from 1:00pm to 7:30pm. Hours of work are based on the needs of the department and college and may be adjusted. Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), push/pull, stooping, bending, standing, grasping, climbing, or walking. must be able to work safely in an environment containing caustic chemicals, cleaning materials, dust, and noise. Routinely required to work under inclement weather conditions. May be exposed to high noise levels at times and extreme temperature changes.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

INIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
At the time of application, all candidates must posses the following:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • General janitorial or custodial experience.
  • A valid, unrestricted drivers license from Washington or another state.
  • Current valid automobile insurance.
  • Experience or participation with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical, and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully as a contributing team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully handle multiple tasks and deal positively with frequent interruptions.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.
