Sussex County Community College is seeking an English Instructor. This position will deliver the foundational courses for the majority of degree and academic certificates at SCCC from within the English Department. This position collaborates with both the AVP of Academic Affairs and Department members. This faculty member must have a strong and demonstrated background in English instruction to a continuum of students with varying degrees of academic readiness. Essential to the success of this position is the following: expertise in the discipline, excellence in teaching both on-campus and in by-distance courses while utilizing the Canvas Learning Management System; participating in professional development and scholarly activity deserving of external peer review and acclaim; development and implementation of curricula; ensuring course and program assessment; engaging in student advisement and retention activities; applying the college/departmental strategic plan; continuous service to the college; implementing and engaging in community outreach; mentoring students; taking strong and meaningful steps in recruiting new students, and taking leadership roles as needed. As a member of the full-time faculty, this individual is responsible for following all guidelines and responsibilities as outlined in the full-time faculty federation contract and in the faculty handbook.

1. Support the mission of the college and the department.

2. Is a recognized and credentialed content expert in the field of English instruction, with sufficient experience and knowledge to lead and teach in this program.

3. Possesses a deep concern for others and the contributions they make to the organization: Intentionally focuses on developing a culture of “caring regard” at the college. Also possesses the skills, abilities and disposition that cultivate community.

4. A deep appreciation, understanding, tolerance, and commitment to free speech, academic freedom, and diversity of thought within an academic organization.

5. Ability to exercise good judgment concerning College policies and procedures.

6. Possesses a proven record of scholarship/creative activity, teaching, and service activities and achievements, and desire to continue this record of achievement.

7. Ability to take on additional leadership roles when assigned.

8. Ability and temperament to provide a review and intervention for any student matters, including but not limited to, grade appeals and classroom management issues, which may emerge when assisting adjunct faculty members navigating issues with their own students.

9. A deep appreciation and acceptance for the differences that exist amongst people.

10. Meaningful participation in and support of the College Novel tradition led by colleagues.

11. Create a dynamic teaching and learning environment for students that embraces innovation and scholarly reflection.

12. A meaningful commitment to working with students at varying stages of academic readiness with a specific emphasis on student mentorship and retention.

13. Understanding that the college possesses managerial prerogative in the development of the teaching schedule and in determining the overall scheduling needs of the College.

14. Responding to student needs in a timely manner.

15. Contribute to Department administration and collaborate within the department as well as with interdepartmental initiatives.

16. Ability to work with Administration on academic and accreditation matters.

17. Contribute to Departmental budget development and assist the Dean in implementation.

18. Teach a variety of classes including day, evening, and online/hybrid classes.

19. Participate in curriculum development.

20. Participate in all aspects of assessment of their programs/certificates in their department.

21. Ability to collaborate with committees and the Department on the selection and ordering of textbooks.

22. Provide support and oversight to potential Clubs and student organizations on campus.

23. Per contractual guidelines, serve on college committees including the college governance process.

24. Ability to communicate with supervisors/students/colleagues, including demonstration of effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

25. Engage in student recruitment initiatives.

26. Passion for the academy, the life of the mind, and the scholarly activity expected of all College faculty.

27. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the overall use of technology.

28. Willingness to collaborate with community partners.

29. Demonstrated effectiveness utilizing an online learning management system.

30. Partake frequently in professional development.

31. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Masters Degree in English required.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in academic instruction in a post-secondary environment

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to teach, develop, support and implement the English curricula.
  • Capability to develop curriculum, class assessments and assessments.
  • Service to the college and building community relationships.

  • Capability for strong leadership.

Salary: $44,594.67
