Working Title: Student Support Specialist            

Position Number: Casual Hire

Hiring Unit: Student Affairs, Lunalilo Scholars Program

Location: Kapi‘olani Community College

Salary: $25.68/hour 

Schedule: Up to 40 hours per week, some weekend days and evening hours may be required

Temporary/Permanent: Temporary

Funding: Special

 

Continuation is dependent on satisfactory performance, program needs, and renewal of funds.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Assists the program director with the dissemination and collection of application and referral material and fields inquiries regarding application status

  • Organizes and conducts the intake process including preparation of applications and referrals for committee review, notification, orientation, etc.

  • Organizes the various components of the program, such as Summer Bridge, presentations, workshops, outreach, donor visits and events, etc.

  • Responsible for ordering supplies and maintaining equipment

  • Participates in campus, feeder high school, and community events to raise the visibility of the program

  • Assists the director in training and monitoring the peer mentors and student workers

  • Maintains methods of communication that create meaningful relationships between the college, the student, and his/her family regarding the transition to college

  • Provides comprehensive enrollment information to potential students

  • Works with various Kapi'olani  Community College departments and units (counseling, academic support, admissions, financial aid, etc.) to ensure seamless transition for students

  • Assists the director in maintaining data and reporting on student progress and outcomes

  • Assists the director in meeting stated outcomes of the program and student services strategic plan

  • Provides excellent customer service around connecting students, referrers, community partners, State of Hawai?i Department of Education, etc. to information about the program and College

  • Handles any problems that arise during outreach activities and consults with director to make adjustments as appropriate

  • Engages with students through the various Kapi'olani Community College student information systems 

  • Recommends improvements for the program based on review and assists in their implementation 

  • Engages in effective and positive work relationships with peer mentors and other College staff that perform outreach at high schools and other programs or agencies.

  • Communicates and consults with director, faculty, and staff to support Lunalilo Scholars and to ensure that the goals of the program are being met

  • Exercises professional judgment in providing quality services to Lunalilo Scholars

  • Assists in database, documentation, and records maintenance according to professional practices and the reporting requirements

  • Other duties as assigned.

     

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in education, social work, human development, family resources, arts & sciences or business or related field and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for student services in a community college setting; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

  • Functional knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in college admission, outreach, and student support demonstrated by knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply concepts and terminology. 

  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with college admission, outreach, and student support. 

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of college admission, outreach, and student support. 

  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations. 

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members, and individuals. 

  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

 

  • Demonstrates the ability to provide excellent customer (or student) service to potential students and families that eases the transition to Kapi'olani Community College.

  • Experience working with Native Hawaiian students.

  • Experience working with first-year, low-income, non-traditional, and first-generation students.

  • Experience working with high school outreach and orientations within a community college.

  • Working knowledge of the entry process for first-year students including admissions, financial aid, and assessment.

  • Experience with the federal student financial aid process and other financial aid resources.

  • Ability to work independently to organize, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow through on details to completion.

  • Experience working with student information and financial management systems.

  • Demonstrates the ability to work with students with disabilities, or from diverse social, economic, ethic, academic, and cultural backgrounds.

  • Experience working with and training peer mentors or student workers.
