Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Career Advisor (CA) will support the career development needs of students in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS). CMNS is the largest enrollment college at the University, and includes more than 7,500 undergraduates pursuing more than 50 academic majors and minor options in the natural sciences, computing, mathematics and data science. There are currently 330 enrolled masters students.

The CA will conduct career advising appointments with undergraduate and masters level students as well as recent graduates of CMNS. The CA will also develop and execute virtual and in-person industry exposure events and career education workshops, in-person career shuttles (employer site visits), and support large, signature career events run by the University Career Center @ CMNS (UCC@CMNS).

In support of academic outreach, the CA will be an instructor of record for a career-specific elective course for CMNS students.

The CA will also support faculty in the development and delivery of career-related content, including assignments and activities, in other STEM courses across CMNS. Additionally, the CA will support the administrative needs of the UCC@CMNS by contributing to college graduation survey efforts, career-focused weekly newsletters, new student surveys, and tracking of student appointments and program information in Handshake. The CA will be supervised by the UCC@CMNS Program Director. The UCC @ CMNS is part of an innovative, embedded career development model linked to the larger University Career Center & The Presidents Promise. The CA will be housed in the CMNS Undergraduate Student Center, part of a larger CMNS team of academic and health professions advisors, and academic program leaders.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors degree required with three (3) years of related experience in career advising, academic advising, experiential learning, college student personnel, or other relevant field.
  • Masters degree in student affairs, counseling, education, human resources, or other related discipline can be substituted for the three (3) years of work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of student development, career development and advising.
  • Passionate commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in collaboration, the ability to interact well with both internal and external stakeholders.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Masters degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs or other related discipline/field.
  • 1-3 years of experience working in career services, preferably with STEM majors.
  • Previous experience presenting workshops and/or executing career-related events.
  • Knowledge of Handshake or similar CRM tool.

Physical Demands

Office environment. May require occasional evening hours. Work takes place both in an office environment and in a virtual online environment; will require ability to travel throughout campus. Occasional physical exertion may be required to prepare and transport event supplies.
