Job Summary

The Advising Manager provides leadership and supervision to the Advising Department. Advises prospective, new, and returning students of educational opportunities and requirements. Provides guidance with educational planning from prospective student through graduation. Assists students with the interpretation of policies and procedures to meet educational and career goals and objectives.

Lead the Department in establishing and achieving annual goals and objectives. Responsible for developing, reviewing, modifying, and implementing Advising Departments procedures and guidelines.

Responsible for supervising and training Advising staff to include performance evaluations.

Responsible for the implementation of the Customer Service Model of Excellence.

Provide department leadership and consistent services by implementation of Institutional procedures, forms, and reports.

Review progress of Advisor caseloads to include persistence, retention, and success.

Identify best practices and applies consistently.

Manage departmental budget and serves as the signature authority. Provide oversight and approval of purchase of office supplies and advising materials.

Provide training opportunities and keeps department abreast of new developments and innovation within the Advising profession.

Represent the Advising Department at System-wide meetings.

Accountable for the success of a caseload of First-Time in College (FTIC) students linked to Student Success Courses. Develop strategies to help FTIC students succeed. Track student progress and provides reports.

Assist with recruitment activities to include arranging on-site College visits for parents and students, pre-enrollment workshops, and new student orientation.

Coordinate or oversee University Transfer Fairs and scheduling of University Transfer Representatives.

Educate students of the steps necessary to complete certificate and degree program requirements through degree planning. Teaches students the skills to self-navigate to degree completion utilizing campus information, student on-line system, and campus resources.

Assist students in the acquisition, usage and evaluation of information including College guidelines, catalogs and on-line resources.

Provide career advisement such as requirements for certain career fields, occupational opportunities with certain majors/workforce programs, etc.

Provide information regarding student life opportunities to include student activities and recreational sports. Informs students of the benefits (i.e.

leadership skills, team building, and, civic engagement).

Interpret admissions assessment scores and advises students of appropriate placement and coursework.

Advise students of appropriate course load, work load, prerequisites and co-requisites.

Assist faculty with the promotion of special programs and opportunities such as learning communities, bridge courses, honors programs, service learning, etc.

Inform students of procedures such as withdrawal, repeating coursework, advanced standing credit, graduation, etc.

Provide transfer planning to universities to include, joint admissions programs, articulation agreements, common course numbering system, and transfer plans.

Provide assistance to students, parents and community agencies with accurate up-to-date information, which will assist in making sound educational decisions.

Provide information and referrals to students needing services such as: tutoring, testing, career counseling, financial aid, disability services, etc.

Provides online advisement services via email, phone, and other applicable technology to students to include out-of-state and Distance Education students as needed.

Assist in retention activities of College including Early-Alert and as team members within the Success Center.

Establish and maintain interdepartmental relationships with all Student Services and instructional programs.

May work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends.

Perform other duties, tasks and assignments as required.

Education and Experience 

• Masters degree required

• Masters degree in Counseling, Guidance, College Student Personnel,

Higher Education Administration, Education, Social Work, Sociology,

Psychology, Human Services preferred

• 3 years work experience in an institution of higher education advising setting required, including 2 years supervisory experience preferably in an institution of higher education

• HCC College Leadership Program preferred

General office. May frequently be required to walk; stand; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer, photocopier, file cabinets, and calculator. Manual dexterity, ability to lift up to 25 pounds, ability to reach and bend, and use 2-step stool while safely lifting and lowering boxes. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. May be required to work after hours to include weekends and holidays.
